  1. Not sure about "A" level, but is sounds like you are refering to what we call ( Into to Geology / Earth Science ).  There you learn the basics.  The geologic time scale, geologic laws of strata-positioning and deposition, paleontology principals and biologic evolution,  plate tectonics, vulcanism, and the classification system and what makes rocks rock.

    Geologist may seem gneiss guys, but they know their schist !!!

  2. I recommend you take a look at this website:

    http://www.wjec.co.uk/uploads/publicatio...

    This is the specification for Advanced Level Geology with the Welsh Joint Education Committee.

    Jump to page 12 in this PDF for the first section on rocks. If you follow the document through from here there are many references to rocks.

    Always remember... Geology rocks!

    I hope this helps. Come back to me if you need anymore help.

  3. Geology is a science that deals with the history of the earth as recorded in rocks.It is the science:

    (a) Of the structure and mineral constitution of the globe; structural geology.

    (b) Of its history as regards rocks, minerals, rivers, valleys, mountains, climates, life, etc.; historical geology;

    (c) Of the causes and methods by which its structure, features, changes, and conditions have been produced; dynamical geology.

    Geology describes the rocky parts of the Earth's crust (or lithosphere) and its historic development. Major sub-disciplines are physical geology, mineralogy, petrology, geochemistry, geomorphology, paleontology, stratigraphy, structural geology, engineering geology and sedimentology.

    We find no vestige of a beginning - no prospect of an end. --Theory of the Earth (1795), James Hutton (Father of Modern Geology).
