Question:

A-Level options, Is taking 5 manic?

Hello, I have just got my GCSE results and have to choose my options for my sixth-form. I got in my GCSE's:

Maths A*

English A

Science Double A/A*

IT Double A/A*

Engineering Double A*/A*

Resistant Materials A*

RE B

English Literature B

PE A

I am looking to go onto university and study Commercial Management and Quantity Surveying, but want to take some different options so I have a better choice if I do get A's at a level. For example taking a course in Medicine then becoming something like an anaesthesist.

I was thinking of taking the following

Maths & Physics (Work well together and im good at both)

IT (Will be useful as everything will be done digitally in future)

DT (Good at it, enjoy it, got 3 A* out of 3)

But then I was looking at a course in Medicine and you have to have a A level in Chemistry, and scene as I got 96% and 94% in the two years I thought I could do it. But then I could not decide whether to drop DT as I enjoy it and its an easy A/B at A level.

So I was wondering to drop the DT or if it is ok to take 5 as levels, then maybe drop one for the A2 levels.

Or is it to hard?

Please Help

Thankyou

  1. I took 5 A Levels (05-07) and I managed fine, got into UCL to do Architecture, which was my uni of choice. I would suggest that you don't do IT- it sounds like a useful subject, but most universities think it's soft. however, seeing as you are doing five, IT will probably be alright in the long haul. Take 5 for the first year, and drop one for A2, you'll be fine.

  2. Congrats on your results!!!!!!!!! And as an answer, no, I am going to do five A-levels (I got eleven A*s so there is not much difference in our grades) and I have a friend who did 6, (A2s, not AS). You will be fine. Good luck! Maybe you should drop DT, carry it on as a hobby, it will be really useful for your personal statement.

  3. I took 5 but it wasn't easy, and I had to do one on half the lessons I was meant to, along with making the decision to not work as hard for that one as the others. I've got to admit, the combination you're going for is pretty tough - DT and IT will involve a lot of coursework and extra work, which'll eat into your time, while Chemistry is one of the hardest A Levels there is - a lot harder than GCSE. Are you sure about the whole medicine thing? It's very tough to get in for it without Biology anyway. Maths and physics will keep open a lot of options anyway, so if you do decide to change course maybe you should look into something related to that? Personally, I'd take 4 because those 5 subjects would be difficult to juggle, but drop one out of DT, IT or Chemistry.

  4. Congratulations on your results.

Taking 5 will be very hard work, but it's not unknown.

Why not start 5 then drop one if the workload is too much?

Just watch out that you're not giving all your time to the "fun" subject (DT) if you really need good grades in the others to do what you want in the future.

  5. Why stop at 5?

  6. 5?! I took 4 and my brain nearly exploded. But it depends on the person, if you think you'll be up to the work (which believe me, there will be alot of) then you will do great! But 5 is not unheard of, i have a friend who is taking 5 and 2 language courses at the same time!

  7. It will be hard but from your GCSE results you will be able to manage aslong aas you work hard!

Im only going to take four x
