Question:

A Little American Toad Help Please!?

by  |  earlier

I need to know how to tame my American toad... I taught her to sit on my floor and not hop away, even though she occasionally tries to run :) ... Usually I can pick her up good but she peed on me today... I've seen very tame toads, so can someone help?

P.S. I've only had her for 3 days, so is that the problem?

  1. Give her time and treat her well. She'll get used to you. However, if the toad is really old, then it may still retain most of its "wild" behaviour. Best bet is to keep it around you for a period of time, making it comfortable. Let it get used to the house.

  2. samatt has it spot on really. some phibs never really warm up to humans others learn to tolerate us but it takes time sometimes even years.

  3. This is a bit difficult. Most amphibians and reptiles are wild by nature, so if they come from the wild, and aren't bred in captivity, they usually take a while to warm up to humans. Remember not to handle the little guy too much, though. Toads and frogs have a protective covering over their skin, and they also absorb water and nutrients through it. Human hands can wear that layer away, and he could even absorb toxic chemicals that are on your skin. Be sure to wash you hands very well, and use a low pH, mild, baby soap before and after you handle him. Good luck!

  4. striker her when she is peeing
