There are three chests in front of you. Each chest contains coins. One chest is labelled "gold," the second chest is labelled "bronze," and the third chest is labelled "gold or silver." All of the chests are incorrectly labelled. How many chests will need to be opened in order to determine the contents of each?

  1. Just one . . . assuming it's not necessary to change the label "Gold or Silver" to one or the other.

Because all 3 are labeled incorrectly, so when you open the first one to see what's in it, you can then put the correct label on it . . . knowing they're all incorrect the other two labels can flip-flop.

  2. 2?

  3. 3!

  4. Answer: none

"Gold or silver" is bronze coins

The "bronze" chest is gold coins

The "gold" chest is silver coins

  5. NONE.

If all of the chests are incorrectly labeled, you know already that the one labeled “Gold or Silver” has to be “Bronze” so you don't need to open it.

So, if that is “Bronze” and the other two chests are incorrectly labeled then you know that the “Gold” has to be “Silver” and the last chest -- which was originally labeled “Bronze”, has to be “Gold”.

    How did I do?

  6. 2 if you are lucky to hit the "gold or silver" chest.  otherwise all three because if you got the gold, you don't know if its the gold or the gold or silver.

The final answer is 3 I think.

  7. One, the one labeled gold. If they are all labeled wrong, then it does not hold gold. You need to see if it holds bronze or silver. From there you can correctly label the rest of the chests.

  8. all of them, since u didnt specify what any of the coins are made of, they could be made of anything

  9. 4

  10. None. You know that the third chest must be bronze; it can't be gold or silver if it's labeled incorrectly. By process of elimination you then know that the chest labeled gold has to silver, and the second chest labeled bronze must be gold.

  11. 3
