Question:

A Mix Breed Question?

I will be getting a puppy soon with the following mix breed:

Mother : 50% Beagle / 50% Cocker Spaniel [White + Tan]

Father : 100% German Shepherd [Black + Tan]

I already saw the puppy it is 4 weeks old. The colours are Black Body with White belly and under neck, paws have a fade of White>Tan>Black. Top of head is Black+Tan. And the puppy looks more like a GSD and Beagle

Question:

1. Possibly what will the dog look like once it gets atleast 4-5 months and older. Will it have more of a GSD look or a Beagle look or the ugly Cocker Spaniel look?

I know this is very hard to say but I am just looking for some insights. If some of you do have the same type of breed or know somebody that does.

  1. Well, that's quite a mix of the breeds! The "sporty" sporting group cocker spaniel, the vocal hound group beagle, and the protecting non-sporting GSD. I have a dog that is a beagle mix as well:

Mother:  50% Papillon / 50% Pekingese (sandy color)

    Father: 100% Beagle

And she definitely looks more beagle. But let me break down the math for you:

    Your dog is 25% Beagle / 25% Cocker Spaniel / 50% GSD

So since the GSD has a larger share of your dog's genes, there is more of a chance it will look like a GSD. But I believe that some beagle traits will come out in the dog. And the cocker spaniel has a pretty traditional look, with traits in many dogs, so the Cocker spaniel "looks" part is probably reduced to 15% of how the dog looks. Adding up to:

    Genes:

    25% Beagle / 25% Cocker Spaniel / 50% German Shepherd

    Looks:

    30% Beagle / 15% Cocker Spaniel / 45% German Shepherd

I wish you luck, the dog sounds so cute! Hope I helped! Feel free to email me about training tips, dog names, or anything related to the sort!

  2. It will look more like a German Shepherd, which makes sense.  Right now the dog is 25% Beagle, 25% Cocker, and 50% German Shepherd.

Since both Beagles and Cockers have long ears, it may have long ears and it will be smaller then a German Shepherd, but it will DEF. look more like a Shepherd because it has more in it.

EDIT:  It could also be totally weird and look like a Beagle or Cocker, but the *chances* of that happening are slimmer.

  3. It's a roll of the dice, you just have to wait and see. Even puppies from this same litter may look very different.
