I just received my A&P license. I would like to get more training in avionics. Is there a way I can do this in the Phoenix area?

  1. Depends on what level of training you're looking for and what you plan to do with that training.

Embry-Riddle University has a campus in Prescott, not far from you, and distance learning as well.

Also you can see if any local avionics shops are looking for apprentice help. They often need installers, which your airframe training would help with, and that may give you experience in installing and troubleshooting wiring for avionics systems as well as getting them to teach you some systems operational theory.

  3. I work in an avionics shop close to Portland Oregon, that works on general aviation aircraft.  That is, small aircraft, some are even experimental.  We have hired several A&P mechanics as installers.  We found this helps both of us, we have certified mechanics that can do structural modifications/repairs as needed and they learn avionics.  Check around at the smaller avionics shops, they are looking for people.  You might check with JSfirm.com for jobs in your area.

  4. I agree with Shane.  There are a couple of us in my shop that work both sides of the fence. It goes w/o saying that it's an invaluable skill to learn.  I don't dare speak for anyone else, but around here, a lot of A&P's avoid avionics like it's the plague, lol...

Which means that if you show a desire to learn this information and ask around, your likely to find an employer willing to teach you.
