A Preview of Wimbledon's St Leger quarter-finals: Part One
Wimbledon is set to host the Williamhill.com St Leger quarter-finals on Friday, October 15. The top three hounds in each of four heats will advance to Tuesday’s semi-finals. The £8000 final is scheduled to be run on October 26.
Williamhill.com St Leger 1st 1/4 Final
In the first trap is Boolavouge, currently sitting at 4-1. He finished second in the first round of heats behind Fawkham Emperor. Boolavogue will be expected to beat Emperor in this quarter-final, but Lottes Girl will probably be the favourite to win the
race.
Lottes will race from trap two. She’s a 2-1 favourite now, but last week she wasn’t expected to qualify for the quarter-finals, let alone win her heat. A weaker field this time around puts her in a good position to earn a place in the semi-final.
Emperor raced from trap six in the first round and stayed wide in a tough battle with Boolavogue. He saw odds of 4-1 last week, but liking the outside positions, the move to the third trap has dropped those odds to 6-1.
In trap four is Fraziers Clone, another hound coming in at 6-1, who upset Bodell Clare last week in a very close race. He’s another wide racer going from a trap that’s a little further inside than usual.
He Went Whoosh is just a little behind Lottes with 9-4 odds. Last week, Whoosh took third place, a ½ length behind Lottes. These two will probably finish one-two in this race, but it is difficult to predict who will end up on top.
The sixth trap will see 10-1 longshot Rio Venturo attempt to qualify for the semi-final. Rio led for most of his race last week, only to drop to third after the sixth bend.
Williamhill.com St Leger 2nd 1/4 Final
Bodell Clare lost a close one last week, and is a big favourite to win this quarter-final from trap one with 5-4 odds.
In trap two is Blue Bee. She’s at 9-2 now, after having a tough first round race as the 5-4 favourite. There’s a good chance she’ll qualify for the semi-finals, but don’t expect much more than that.
In trap three is 8-1 longshot Droopys Had. He surprised many last week, finishing tied for second in a close race. Similar results in this race are not likely.
Sapphirine will go from trap four. She’s at 6-1 after taking second place in the first round heats.
Last week, Bower Hawk lost to 10-1 longshot Blonde Blitz by a shoulder. This week he’ll go from trap five with 7-2 odds, and will probably be Clare’s biggest challenge.
Blitz goes up against Hawk again this week. Last week he ran from trap five and stayed wide, this week he’ll go from trap six. The move could help Blitz earn another win, although this time he’ll be up against both Hawk and Clare. Blitz is currently sitting
at 8-1, if those odds stay long, he’ll be a good longshot to take a chance on.
Best bet: Blonde Blitz
