what is the russian letter for latin "e" and capital "E"? is it "e" or "э" ?

for instance, when you write "perfect" with russian letters (not the russian word, latin word written with russian letters), is it "пэрфэкт" or "пeрфeкт" ? i mean, like writing "Ленин" with russian letters, meaning lenin.

  1. 'e' is pronounced ay (like what canadians say, eh?)

the backwards three character is pronounced more like 'zheh'

  2. The proper way to transliterate the word would be "пёрфект" (using the letter "Ё"). That is due to the fact that "perfect" is pronounced as "poerfect", not "paerfect". The Russians often skip the dots in "Ё", so "перфект" should be moderately fine. "Пёфэкт" would be the closest to the original, but it would look very weird to a Russian.

As for "Э", its usage is much more limited than that of "E", and it might often look awkward except when your aim is to make the word sound as foreign and as close to the original as possible. You should probably stick to using it only when it's the first or the last letter in the word.

It is important to note that when transliterating English words into Russian, you should place pronunciation above the spelling. Simple transliteration might work with German, but not with English, where the way the word is spelt and the way it's pronounced often don't coincide.

The previous poster is mistaken in his assumption that "Е" is read as "ye" in Russian words. The situation is identical to that of the letter "A" in English, for instance. While it is pronounced as "aye" as a separate letter, it is almost never pronounced this way when part of a word. Thus "Ленин" is "Laenin", not "Lyenin". In order to make it sound as "Lyenin", one has to place a soft sign before "E", like this: "Льенин".

  3. Е,е and Э ,э are 2 completely different Russian Cyrillic alphabets.

Е.е is pronounced as "Ye" (Ye as in Yes)

Э.э is called (e oborotnoye. That is "reversed e") and pronounced as "e" (e as in echo)

перфект. Stress on the 2nd e. (Probably "Pyerfyekt)

Ленин (pronounce as Lyenin not Lenin)

I recommend that you use a Russian-English, English-Russian dictionary as your guide when writing Russian words. Like in English, some Russian words are written differently than spoken.
