  1. What we know about autism changes frequently ... and part of that is because people are like you, and they want to know what will happen in the future for a relative or loved one.  To be honest, I can't tell you if your brother will ever get married, have a good job, etc.  I couldn't tell you that about any 12 year old, though.  Autism is a 'learning disability' but not because your brother can't take in the learning ... he can't communicate it back to us.  Recently, there was an article on television about a 13 year old autistic girl who couldn't speak or communicate in any way.  Somehow when she had a computer, though, she started typing and she can't talk but she does have a good mind and communicates quite beautifully about what life is like from her autistic point of view.  This is WONDERFUL because that means that we can now assume that a non-communicative autistic person does have intelligence and can work out problems, and what we must do is find ways to help them communicate.  You are good to worry about your brother, but all I can tell you is that with this one 'tiny new step' into knowing about autism, some very HUGE things are going to be happening in the next ten years ... so perhaps there is hope for your brother and for others with autism ... hope for a better future, including having a wife, a job, and being able to look forward to being 'just like everyone else' ... and you are correct ... most people with autism are good looking and very nice ... if only the world could see that they ARE NORMAL but just have a difficult time 'handling society' in a communicative way.

  3. I was an autistic child, I know what it is to become one. I can't explain how I really feel. My parents during those time doesn't know what it is. I just figure it out how to manage to understand everything besides difficulties of doing so. My teachers didn't understand me but are always amazed how unattentive I may seem yet I can answer her questions quite well. Today I am a Special Education teacher. I still have the strain though. But I could manage my life like any person.
