my brother wants to apply for MIT but in my opinion he doesn't meet the requirements. but he has some crazy grades! He has a GPA of 3.9. He got a 7/7 in IB higher level MATH and 6/7 in IB higher level PHYSICS which are the hardest subjects that IB has to offer. He also has a 6/7 in IB chemistry standard level. He has never worked with student council or stuff similar to that....because he wants to be an engineer and thinks that its bullshit that people that wanna study engineering should do stuff like that!! He has been on the school's soccer team and basketball since freshman year. He also has taken robotics. He hasn't done the SATS yet but chances are he will do pretty well. I just wanted to know your opinion on whether he would make it to MIT or any other high class universities such as stanford, yale, waterloo......????

  1. He has the scores for MIT, and his sports and the robotics count as his extra curriculars. Depending on his SAT scores, he has a shot at MIT and other top tech schools like it. Of course, naturally, he should also have some backup schools, because the top schools simply get so MANY good applicants that they reject perfect people.

For engineering, he should also look at these elite engineering schools: Harvey Mudd, Rose Hulman Institute of Technology, Olin College of Engineering, The Cooper Union, Stanford, U Toronto, U Cal Berkeley, California Institute of Technology, U Illinois Urbana Champaign, U Michigan Ann Arbor, and Carnegie Mellon. Other great schools that he should consider, with excellent engineering programs, but where the school as a whole is just a bit less hyper-selective than the above, are: Rensselaer Polytechnic, Cal Poly San Louis Obispo, Boston University, Worcester Polytechnic and Villanova.

I'm not sure I'd rank Yale's engineering program up there with the others, actually. And Waterloo is a good second choice to U Toronto in Canada, but U Toronto is a step above Waterloo, so he should look at it.

Please pass this list on to him.

  2. If he does not apply he will never know. The essay is important make sure it is good.

University of Masachusetts Lowell is an excellent engineering school, they are well known for this fied. Did he look into that? Tuition is also much more affordable. The school is VERY multicultural. Its something like 40% indian, 30% african 20% asian and 10% caucasian. It is a great melting pot.
