Question:

A Question for Doctors-Would you want your child to go to medical school?

I am having doubts whether I should go to medical school or not. Someone I know who has already graduated from medical school said to me that being a doctor is not worth the amount of work put into the required schooling, and there is a lot of work put into miscellaneous things, such as attorney's fees and paperwork. Is being a doctor not as good as everyone makes it out to be?

  1. My dad's a doctor, and he sure as h**l didn't want me to go to med school! He told me just about everything that you just said; the hours are exhausting, a whole lot of schooling, and an obviously exhausting job.

I have my own personal reasons for going to med school, though; so I'm going to live my life for me, not him.. ;-)

  2. It is, but more than most professions, you must be completely honest with yourself as to why you're doing it.  It cannot be for prestige or financial security - the profession has a fraction of both now compared to even just 20 years ago.

Now more than ever, you must become a doctor because you feel like it's the ultimate way to give back to your society - to help people regain the opportunity to reach their full potentials.

  3. you really have to love what you do and money should not be the first reward to consider.  although once you become a doctor money should not be an issue.

some schools only require a high school diploma, they have a joined pre-med/med program. check out this site. it has information on what med schools require, how to apply, when to apply and comprehensive list of schools.

    good luck!

  4. I think its a good (but not great) career move IF you know what you're getting in to. Its a huge investment in time and money and once you start there is no going back because you will have enormous debt. That being said, you gt a lot of respect and you are almost guarenteed making 6 figures.

  5. My children were aware of all the c**p that goes with being a physician.  I discouraged my kids from entering medicine, because if any of them did decide to go that route, I wanted it to be THEIR decision.

If one wanted to go to medical school, I would support him/her fully once that decision was made.

None of my kids are headed in that direction, though.  I have one who has already finished college and has a non-medical job, another who wants to be an architect (and fears blood and needles) and a third who is an actress/dancer and may go into teaching special needs children if the acting thing doesn't pan out.

If you are called to the profession, you put up with the c**p in order to do what fulfills you.  If you just think about it logically, nobody would ever go to med school.
