A Question for anyone with more than 1 computer -DSL?

I am a brand new DSL user (I was on dial up). I have AT&T DSL as of 2 weeks ago. My question is: Just bought a 2nd computer (both are desktops) I want to be able to have both computers on the DSL service. I called AT&T & they sent me a router modem which I guess is supposed to allow up to 4 computers to access the service. Just got it today. Since the computers are in separate rooms how do I connect both computers to the one modem- I figured I would get an extra ethernet connection (which I didn't) but still, even if I did they would not be long enough. I am not at all technical- Can anyone help?

  1. You have two options. First, get an RJ-45, Ethernet patch cable at your local computer store. It should be adequate for the speed of your router (probably CAT 5e or 6). Simply tell the sales people, but most likely they will only have the newest cabling. They come in lengths up to 100 feet. If that is still too short you have the biggest house in the world and should have your servants do this. Seriously, you might have to have it made. If your store doesn't carry them, go to Fry's, MicroCenter, or shop online at Yahoo Shopping (I saved the URL below for you).

Second, you could buy  a wireless router to replace the one AT&T sent you and a wireless interface card for your PC. This option is somewhat more complicated to setup and will require you to read the manuals. There are also security problems and higher costs to deal with. But, while the cost is high and the performance a bit less, the range is generally much better than cable.

    Good luck.
