A Red Bull one-two as Sebastian Vettel wins the Turkish Grand Prix – Formula 1 Update
After setting up a record of five consecutive pole positions Saturday, Sebastian Vettel capped it with a brilliant driving performance to seal his third win of the year at the Turkish Grand Prix and consolidate his position at the top of the driver’s standings
on Sunday, May 8.
The race was a treat to watch in Istanbul as throughout the race apart from Vettel no driver was able to dominate.
Mark Webber over-took Fernando Alonso with just five laps remaining in the race to seal yet another one-two for the Red Bull team. Alonso held on for the last podium spot to consolidate Ferrari’s position in the championship.
The two McLarens of Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button were also entangled in a fascinating battle for fourth place, but Hamilton’s extra pit-stop strategy paid off as he claimed fourth.
Nico Rosberg piped Button to fifth position as the Brit’s tyres faded towards the end of the race.
While the battle down the track heated up, Vettel kept his composure and ensured his smooth progress as he built up almost a six second lead at the top before his first pit stop in the 10th lap of the race.
The reigning World Champion made sure he was not caught in a final flurry of stops by other drivers as he came in for a fresh pair of tyres. Vettel wanted to make sure that there a repeat of what happened in China, where he was denied a victory by Hamilton
with only four laps remaining in the race.
During the Turkish Grand Prix, Vettel was inspirational as he crossed the chequered flag eight seconds clear of his team-mate Webber and a further two ahead of Ferrari’s Alonso.
