    Companionway is the entrance to a cabin...often conatining stairs or a ladder...as in "Companionway Ladder" or "Companionway steps"

  4. They are properly referred to as a companionway but also called ladders and stairs.  It's a common mistake to refer to an entry as a companionway.  It's actually a hatch or hatchway.

  5. A ladder. HOWVER, cruise ships and the like have stairs and I believe riverboats used landlubber terms.
