Question:

A Small Theft Issue?

Roxy is the biggest thief I've ever met.

Right now, she has just about EVERYTHING we own under the bed, shoes, socks, remotes, bottles, toys, shirts, pants, lotion bottles, guitar tuners, game consoles, chargers, CDs and CD cases, etc.

Of course, we don't allow her to HAVE these things, and we take whatever she's hidden under there daily, but WHY does she do this? It seems like she's trying to be a pirate or something...

Her handiwork:

  1. Have you checked up under the box spring? Seems like she could start hiding the stuff that she doesn't want you to find there!

As for WHY she does it? ... it's probably her way of playing "find it" with the humans/pet parents.

  2. Oh my gosh how funny. Is that her in the pic...I mean look at that innocent face...are you sure she did it?  She looks so adoring.  I think dogs do it, to hide their prey, like in the wild.  And even though she is not eating them she might be prey driven...are their other dogs in the house?  If so she is trying to keep things to herself...was  she picked on in the litter..as some dogs hide as they got pushed out of the food dish.  I do think she is ready for most anything talking on the phone..and keeping her body in shape with the water bottles...and a nice place to sleep to.  I really think she is just trying to tell you it was someone else and she was tattling on them.

  3. Could you do me a favor and see if there are a pair of black, square framed reading glasses under there?  Mine were last seen last Sunday on the coffee table on top of my book, but they seem to have completely disappeared (The cover of the book was nearby in 3-4 pieces, so I know it's a "Dog related" incident).

At least you know where to look!

  4. Haha @ the wii remote. Mine had chew marks all over it from the dogs.

Shes saving up for a rainy day. One day you may need that remote or empty bottle of water... and she'll be there to save the day!

  5. Roxy probably does this because she knows she's not allowed to. Plus she probably gets a kick out of laying down watching while you guys search for the stuff she hid

  6. I gotta tell you, PP, you have some BEAUTIFUL mixed dogs.  Max and Roxy are just gorgeous!  I'm assuming Sparky is the Pittie in your picture and he's a cutie as well!

Don't blame your cute, cute dog for your inability to clean under your bed!  Your mama taught you better than that! ;-)

But really, how can such an innocent face be such a klepto?  My big dogs don't really "steal" things, unless it's from each other. :-)

  7. those are her things. she is collecting them. and since you dont fit in there too well... that is why she is taking them in there. Maybe she needs something else to do. something more acceptable to you! like chewing a rawhide or something. she might like the basted ones. I would try it atleast!

  8. I had a cat that used to steal stuff all the time. He'd take socks, necklaces, rings, pens, little stuffed animals, even the cap off the toothpaste! It took us months to figure out he was the culprit. I don't know why some animals do it. It's kind of cute but seriously annoying at times. I honestly think the sneaky little bugger secretly found it amusing to watch my brother, sister, and I fighting to get our stuff back from each other.

  9. Well at least you always know where you stuff is lol.

  10. Wow!! Be happy shes not a chewer, like my dog,

instead of hiding htem, he shreds them, even if he has about half of the pet store's chewies all over the house

    He's destroyed:

    2 microphone / headphones

3 CDs, case and all, LOL

    1 stuffed animal

    countless socks

all the rope toys we ever gave him..

    gah too long to list!

I don't think its any "old wolf trait" or anything, it's cute though :D

I guess all dogs have their little quirks.

Maybe you can try blocking off under the bed so she doesn't hide them there?

  11. The same reason ferrets steal socks underwear bras, pencils, gel pens, and birth control cases. Cuz they can lol. She is queen of all that she can her muzzle on.

Dogs are just like that. They hoard something out of habit or just for the fun of watching their humans look for whatever they took

  12. I've found that my puppy gets mischievous when either he's not getting enough attention or bored with his current allotment of toys. he also loves anything that smells like mommy or daddy.  I constantly find him dragging our dirty clothes from the laundry room to play with.  maybe take her to Petco this weekend and let her pick out some new toys.

  13. Hehe that's one of the funniest things I've seen in a while!

I've heard of dogs that "hoard" stuff... not to chew, just to keep.  Usually they bring things to their bed though, not UNDER yours!

I'm guessing she finds stuff of yours comforting, since they have your smell and make her feel safer, so she collects them and brings them to her safe space.  CD's and cases though are a little unusual.

  14. Well bless her little hoarding heart!

She's just claiming things for Spain! =) I would have liked to see her dragging the golf club, I bet that was hilarious!

Let me know if you find a pink slipper. I lost that awhile back and the other one is lonely.

  15. HEY....you found my missing wii-mote!!!

    thanks
