I planted 2 sunflower seeds which my son bought home from school, they started off on the kitchen window, but one died and the other one was planted out into a large well drained tub approx end of june. since then it has shot up like a rocket and shows no signs of stopping. it is at present about 8 feet tall and looks very healthy but there is no sign of a head growing. my question is ... when will the head start growing or will there be a head because the other sunflower seedling died or am i being too impatient, i cant believe the rate at which this amazing flower is growing, thank you for your time.

  1. I agree with David g,though my sunflowers are having the opposite problem due to a variety of factors including the smokey skies here in N.CA. Mine bloomed early and at a very short height.

The only way sunflowers come back is if you leave the seeds on the heads (lovely natural bird feeder) and the plant reseeds itself.

  2. we planted 2 also but only about 3 ft at present.Be patient it will happen x

  3. Have 2 that are 7' tall and no buds yet, cannot wait.

  4. Just be patient.  It will produce a bud soon enough.

  5. Some sunflowers, especially the giant ones can take up to 100 days to reach maturity, It still has plenty of time. Sounds like you are doing everything right.

Just be patient. Easy for me to say:)

  6. Giant sunflowers can take quite a long time to flower and be quite erratic,I sowed 5 seeds in pots in late March, transplanted to growing position when large enough, 1 flower is now 15" across and 10ft tall, and the flower is gone to seed, 2 have been out for about a week now and the other 2 are just in bud, so be patient.

Good luck with yours I hope you get a large flower.

  7. Whilst I cannot answer your question, I just want you to know that my sunflower (about 7ft tall) got a lovely head on it within the last week.   Looks like another on the way also.

  8. Some sunflowers flower as early as June, others like the very tall variety can flower in early sept.Make sure you have a strong stake,as the weight of the flower head can bring the flower crashing down

  9. I like Sunflowers

  10. When planted in the spring, will flower in the summer. Re-appearing year after year they bring great hues of yellow to a sunny garden. You may have to wait. If it doesn't flower in summer, you may have to try the chance next summer.
