A Sweeping victory for the Green Dragons
It was a bright day for the Lake Placid swimming teams who have gathered for Class 1A-District 5 swimming meet at Winter Haven on 27th of October. The boys and girls teams had been there while wearing their team titles.
“It was a worth enjoying day, a very eventful, for us, the two days which brought many ups and downs culminating in a sweet victory paid the rewards for the efforts” said Tom Creel, the Lake Placid coach. The event had ended with placing Avon Park
Red Devils boys’ team at fourth position while the girls could only make it to the seventh position.
The event brought a guaranteed advance to the regional meet for each winner. The regional meet is expected to take place on 6th of November at Indiana River State College in Ft. Pierce. The top twenty of the three districts from the region would
then be allowed to go for the inter regional’s. What that means is even Avon Park and Lake Placid would not be sure for who would advance to the final stages until all of the districts would complete their meets.
The Green Dragons eventually had depicted some of the best performances in the event which ensured their placement into the regional’s, including into the 200-yard freestyle relay teams from Dylan Weber-Callahan, Kevin Smit, Edwin Velzquez and Pike Cloninger.
The team succeeded in breaking the school competitions record which had been set in 1991 for finishing in just one minute and 33.60 seconds. James Baker, the assistant coach for Lake Placid had the privilege of being a member of the team which had held the
record for 19 long years.
The performance depicted by the girls freestyle relay team for 400m was also commendable. Consisting of Rachel Cope, Shannon Vio, Shannon Cummings and Camille Renzoni, the team crossed the finishing line in four minutes and 17.32 seconds.
Tayler Allcom had been the fastest of the 200m freestyle for covering the distance in two minutes and 4.28 seconds. Cummings on the other hand made it to top the girls 50 freestyle in a time span of 26.57 seconds. Smit made it to capture the 100 butterfly
title in 56.85 seconds. The Green Dragons eventually swept both of the 100 freestyle events for Cummings crossed the finishing line in 58.25 seconds. On boys’ side, Weber Callahan won the side for making it to the finishing line in just 53.10 seconds. Clonninger
also contributed his victory in 100 break stroke for making the position of the Green Dragons further stronger.
Lake Placid has been in an excellent position to contribute a number of swimmers for advancing into the next levels, given that the times from winners of other districts are known for its squad had a number of top-five finishes.
The prominent performers from Avon Park, who had the chances to advance further consisted of Kyle Jahna, Gary Gergen, Austin Penny, Eric Parker, Tanner Lee, Kiri Crommett and Mitchell Guerdt, along with athletes from both boys’ and girls’ 200 medley at Winter
Haven. The Sebring dive team had been consisted of three marvellous divers who quite easily exceeded the qualification score of 280 points at the district level, however, despite of that none of them could receive an automatic bid for the upcoming regional’s.
With a score of 309.95, McKenzie Hargadan had been place fourth in the event while Sara Bohan, amid scoring 282.95 scores for the Sebring girls could only end up at the sixth position. With a total of 301.00, points for the Sebring boys, Fred Cooper was
also placed at the sixth number. Once all the districts would be done with their local competitions, there would be a selection of 24 divers from the large pool of the winners. These 24 swimmers would then be promoted to take part into the regional competitions,
while representing their corresponding districts as well as their region as a whole.
