I'm going to get a Syrian Hamster and I dont want to put it in a cage because it will chew the bars which can cause brain damage and a tank may cause respitory illness. what do you suggest? Tank or Wire CAge?

  1. use a wire cage it wont chew threw it if you play with it everyday it wont want to try and escape

  2. i think that a cage is better because it gets more coolness flowing thowe it

  3. wire cage

  4. I've used both.  I like the cage because it seems more free, but my hamster always chewed on it like crazy.  Its loud so keep that in mind when choosing.  If that doesn't bother you then go for it. get one that you can connect all sorts of tubes to and hide food down the tubes.  They love to climb all through

My hamster that were in tanks didn't ever develop any respritory illnesses.

  5. a cage, they love the fresh air flowing through, and when they are young they like to climb on the bars.  It is also easier to get a hamster wheel, and a water bottle in.

  6. Cage, forsure.

  7. Cage! That's what I have. Two story for me!

  8. Anything will doo. Dont worry but make sure the tank has everything it needs for a hammy. Also make sure there is little holes on the roof for air

  9. Cage.  The possibility of chewing bars is far more appealing than the guarantee of respiratory illness.

  10. I would suggest you get a wire cage for a hamster.

  11. a wire cage. it allows the air to flow through more. and to prevent biting on the cage you have to put plenty of toys in it. they chew on the wire because they are board. and make sure the cage isnt to small.

  12. a cage would be better atho i use a tank but any1 of those is fine as long as it has a place to sleep and be safe.

  13. I don't know why you think it'll guarantee those things.  I had both a tank AND a wire cage for my hamsters.

The wire cage, don't get critter trail, was nice.  It had a few levels and they enjoyed climbing up it.  They chewed the bars, though, and it made the cage look ugly, but it didn't really make them sick or anything.  They were perfectly okay and died of old age.

Now, my other hamster, some didn't like climbing.  My other hamster was perfectly okay with making a nest and walking in his wheel.  He didn't really like the wire cages.  Same thing for him, he was perfectly healthy until the day of his death.

I guess it's all about preference.  For both you and the hamster.  If it is young and small still, you can consider a wire cage.  It won't get as big as other hamsters since the cage doesn't allow for it, but it won't really hurt him.

Now placing a hamster too big for a wire cage in there will be stressful and could possibly lead him to biting himself and bleeding to death.  That's a little more extreme, but he'd probably be stressed and unhappy for the most part.

Just be sure that, if you buy a wire cage, to buy something to lock the door shut.  My hamsters were clever and knew how to open the door.  Luckily I was around whenever they tried to and found out soon enough to get a lock for their cages.

Hamsters can also get out of tanks too by climbing things.  So it's a good idea to get a heavy lid and something to possibly weigh it down if your hamster ever gets high enough.  Don't get a thin wire screen top..  My hamster chewed right through it once, lol.  Just helping you pick out the best cage top.

Avoid:  silver, thin wire.  When you push on it, it goes down.

Look for:  hard, black wire.  when you push on it, it won't really go down at all.  It bends in the middle as well.
