a hav a cache diploma in childcare and education and have been out of work for 6 months and hav a interview at a nursery and would like to kno some questions and answers regarding the interview if anyone can help thanks xx

They'll be looking more at your general nature...patience levels etc...and your references will matter the most for a job like this. It will be more whether they feel comfortable in your prescence and if you fit their situation than the actual answers to your interview questions. Good Luck!

be prepared with your c.v.

What they may ask you...

do you have first aid training? make sure you let them know you have. would you know what to do in an emergency? Are you familiar with the laws of childcare pertaining to your country? the laws of confidentiality of each child/family? Are you going to bring something new to the nursery, for example do you have any special skills in art/crafts/drama/play?

do you have experience in challenging behaviour? How do you cope under pressure?

Questions you could ask them...

Will you be restricted to a certain age group?

What is the ratio of staff to children in the nursery?

How is the day structured for the children and the staff?

Does the nursery have it's own policy and procedures manual?

General questions like start times etc. Uniform?

Holidays?

Let them know that you will be very involved with the children...never just sitting and watching the children from across the room or playground. You will always be singing or reading or interacting in some way. Tell them the only time that you will be sitting is on the floor or at a table for games, puzzles, etc. Make it clear that you never take your eyes off of the children. If the children are older and will be going outside, tell them that you do a constant headcount....count to one end of the group, then back again.  

Be able to do the Hokey-Pokey.

I can't tell you exact answers. They will ask questions that make them feel safe leaving children in your care. Be capable, unflustered, but able to have fun. This is not a job interview where you want to seem like too much of a business professional. If they take you into a room to see how you interact, you can't get down on a child's level in a pencil skirt and heels.

You will probably be asked questions on child protection and safeguarding children, the Foundation stage and birth to three (possibly even the new Early years foundation stage, although this is not officially rolled out until next year).

You will possibly be asked about behaviour management, confidentiality, observations, planning, developmental knowledge and partnership with parents.

It all depends on how the nursery carries out interviews.

The main thing is to relax and be yourself. If you are asked to work in the room during the interview, make sure you interact with the children, and get down on the floor with them.

Presumably if your applying to be a nursery nurse you may be asked about the birth to three framework and also the foundation stage and if you have done record keeping before.

They may also ask what you know about child protection and what confidentiality means to you.You may be asked if you would be willing to gain further knowledge by undertaking training.There is new government  legislation out for next year so doing a bit of research on this before your interveiw will look good, also please don't turn up wearing dangly earings and lots of jewellery as this does put some employers off (Myself and my other joint manager). They may ask you about spelling, punctuation, capitalization, misuse of abbreviations and run-on sentences.

you will most definitely be asked questions relating to the 3-5 curriculum and possibly the 0-3 curriculum depending on the age group you are going to be working with.  You will almost certainly be asked about issues regarding child protection,  this is usually put over in a scenario situation  IE 'what would you do if a child disclosed information to you?'.

It may also be worth your while finding out about 'curriculum for excellence'  , this is a new nationwide government initiative aiming to provide a new curriculum for ages 3-18 based around the importance of learning through experience/play.

These will be the most tricky questions - others will be more experience based so just answer honestly and you'll do fine.  Good luck .

Child protection is very inportant. Read up on this. They will ask you about planning for the children. Remember to say you would plan for each individual child. Sell yourself positively. If they ask what you have to bring to the nursery mention good communicater, good listener, approachable, can get down to the childrens level. Mention any previous expereince you have with children. They might ask you how to settle children. Depending in what age group you will be working with make sure you answer the question for that age group. Always have a question to ask the interview pannel. It could be about policies, what policies they have up and running. It could be if they offer their employes training.
