He (or she but I'm going to call it a he for now) has a short tail that is flat at the end and it looks like he fell out of his nest. He keeps chirping like he is calling for his parents. He can't fly, he has just been hopping around our yard. He seems to be fairly young too, Although he does have feathers. We tossed out some bread for him (we usually toss out end slices of bread or rejected crusts for birds) to eat. It doesn't looked like he's touched it though and that was a half hour ago. What should we do? When we found him, he was on the step of our porch, if that helps.

  1. that happened to us...we got all excited and brought a baby bird we found in our house in those bird traveling containers...we then placed it in a cage we weren't using and made sure it was comfy...we gave it water, and we took the soft part of wheat bread and soaked it in water to make it mushy enough for it to eat it..it may not..depends..then the next day..we took it outside and opened to cage..and amazingly, it flew over to the bottom of a tree, and later, some other wild birds came and escorted it......

i don't know if you would want to do that..but atleast you can make sure it is in a safe place, so cats or something won't eat it..

  2. Find its nest, or a rescue. If you chose to keep it you have to feed it every 10-15 minutes and the odds are it will still die. It is true that birds have a bad sense of smell and will not reject the bird so dont be afraid to put it back. I have a tree outside my house where Ive had to place several baby birds back and I have never seen them reject any.

And yes there is a chance that the mother will push it out again, but she is not rejecting it.  She is trying to teach it.  She will remain around and still care for it.  Chances are the parents are watching you but not approaching cause you are around.

  3. well if u can find the nest u should but it back up there however if it feel out once whats stopping it from doing it again?? so i think she should try to take care of it like gettting a shoe box with dry towels so it can sleep and feeding it mashed up warm rice with twessers or something.

  4. leave him for a while where you found him and stay out of sight. the mom most likely will feed him on the ground if they are unable to put him back in the nest.

it may be that he is old enough to start fending for himself and the mom has weaned him of her care, in this case he will probably hang around your yard until he learns to fly.

if he is very young and you think something has happened to the mom there are probably vet offices or wildlife rehabilitation centers in your cityh who will either take him into their care or help you type his species and give free advice on how to care for him.

  5. You should try to find the nest, and if you can put in the nest.  if not check to see if the momma is feedding it , if swhe is you can leave it there. If not bring it to a shelter.

  6. If the bird is fully feathered, it is most likely a fledgling and has left the nest on it's own and it's parents are caring for it. It is normal for birds to leave the nest before they can fly. You need to replace it where you found it..preferably in a scrub or tree so it is relatively safe from predators, and the parents should come back to feed it. If it is unfeathered...then look for a nest and if you can find it...replace it into the nest. Do not worry about your scent being on the chick..birds have a very poorly developed sense of smell and will NOT reject a baby that has been touched. If you cannot find a nest, get the bird to a local wildlife rehab for it's best chance of survival. Also, keep in mind, it is illegal for you to try and raise this bird on your own. Look for a rehab here:

  7. If this baby bird is fully feathered then it is fine and the parent birds will come and feed it if you stay away. Sit back hidden and watch for a hour or so. This bbaby bird is called a Fledgling. It is old enough to be out of the nest but not to fly just yet. All baby birds spend some time 2-4 days on the ground hidden and their parents come to feed them. The parents recognize the birds call and the baby recognizes their call. If the bird is hurt, ice cold to the touch, then he needs help if not leave alone. If the bird has no feathers then needs to be put back in nest if possible or make a makeshift nest with a strawberry container and some tissue. Put it as close to the real nest as possible and sit and watch. Hidden of course. The parent birds will feed it. it is a myth that if they smell human on it they wont feed. They indeed have very very poor sense of smell. If they dont come and you really feel the bird in hurt or in danger then take him to a vet who excepts wildlife and they will send him or you with him to a wildlife rehabber for the proper care. If you have to feed him then soak cat food in water and pat dry chop up small and place in back of throat when he gapes. Do NOT give water. Can even offer mealworms that you get at petstores.

  8. DO NOT PUT IT BACK IN ITS NEST!!! IF YOU WANT IT DEAD, THEN PUT IT IN ITS NEST!!! take dog food and hot water and put it in the blender. feed the bird with tweezers.
