Just to let you know not to let the kids or old folks cook popcorn in the microwave. A popular brand caught fire in my microwave (low wattage) 3 days ago. It burnt and melted the plastic ring that holds the glass plate, too. Dangerous stuff.

  1. seems odd for that to happen.  A production fluke I guess.

  2. Hmm. Wonder if it was for a convection and not for a microwave. They sell those now.

  3. did you take the plastic cover off? ;-)

That's pretty scary, and good to know. My cousin once covered her plate with tin foil and put it in the microwave. She was 8, so really didn't know much better. It killed the microwave though!

  4. That's what I hate about popcorn - and I love the stuff! You have to really watch how long you leave them in. I never understood why they made a "Popcorn" button on the microwave, or even bother putting a time on the bag. It almost NEVER takes the time you're given, and therefore burns it. Each microwave I've used has required a completely different time setting for it.

  5. How old is your microwave?

  6. I've popped literally hundreds of bags of popcorn in a multitude of microwaves and have NEVER had a problem such as you describe!

Is this something you heard (in other words an urban myth/legend) or something you witnessed first-hand?  I would tend to be quite skeptical if it were the former, and suspicious of the equipment used if it were the latter.

  7. Sorry to see that happen to your microwave.

I would suggest going to a walmart or target

get a Minny Popcorn machine, Let me tell you

way better than microwaved, You can add

butter and salt to your liking.
