  1. There is a very beautiful but small intimate Catholic Church in Hampstead, the "village* in North London where the arty and literate live and socialise. The Church is in the Spanish fashion and blends in well with the Victorian buildings in London. If you take the Underground train to Hampstead (the TUBE as we call it)

It's on the Northern Line northbound destination "Edgware".

When you come out of the station turn left, cross over the road

at the Zebra crossing and continue down the hill until you come to the King William pub. (This pub is famous as a g*y Pub) turn right down the little road right before the pub. One minute or less down this side-street you come to another main road, and turn left here.

Almost immediately you come to Church Row a turning off to the right. Beautiful houses here dating back to the 15th century.

At the bottom of Church Row is Hampstead Church (Church of England = Episcopal)  The road swerves to the right of the church, and here there is a little road to the right alongside a cemetery

belonging to the Catholic Church. One minute along here brings you to the little Catholic church on the right hand side. From Tube Station to the Church will take you about 5-10 minutes no more.

  2. The Brompton Oratory

  3. westminster cathedral on victoria street, sw1

beautiful, lovely services, lots of quiet spaces for contemplation

  4. There's a lovely church in Holborn not far from the station. I can't remember the name but I have been there and really liked it

  5. The website of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Westminster (which covers all of central London north of the Thames) has a map on its website that shows where all of its churches are located, and links to pages that (in most cases) give details of mass times, etc.

These three are quite prominent Catholic Churches in the centre of town, that both hold a relatively high number of masses (through the week as well as on Sunday), and that are also noted for their beauty, and, in fact, in all three cases, also for their music. (Although now I think about it...the school choirs that provide the music, at least for the Oratory and the Cathedral, will be on holiday for the summer now)

But, yes, the Brompton Oratory is a unique and very special place indeed

(near South Kensington or Knightsbridge tube stations)

The Jesuit Church in Farm Street, Mayfair (near Green Park or Bond Street tubes) is also well known

    Then there is

Westminster Cathedral (near Victoria or St James's Park tubes)

How could I forget: St James Spanish Place

    http://www.spanishplace.hemscott.net/

(v near to  Bond Street tube): beautiful and reverent indeed (slightly less conservative than the Oratory, arguably)

Others that might be of interest (such as St Mary Moorfields, near Liverpool Street tube; St Mary's, Hampstead; Corpus Christi, Maiden Lane, near Covent Garden or Charing Cross tubes) celebrate mass less often, but should generally be open most of the daytime
