Question:

A better question: Did Texaco / Chevron Waste their Money on Obsolete Car Battery Technology?

The technology purchased by Texaco / Chevron electric car battery was based upon, NiMH technology. This at that time was perty good. However, on reading about the Tesla and Lightning electric cars it appears that much greater performance can be gained from Li composite or ceramic technology.

Your comments on this or even more advanced electric car battery technology will be appreciated

  1. lets see if they recall that one like they did back in the 90's

    so it can be destroyed

    goodluck

  2. And their batteries that they supplied for the Saturns were just recalled yesterday!

The special Large format NIMH for transportation use (F cells and bigger)  have been kept off the market and Lithium Iron Phosphate is about to overtake it.

At the time, Chevron thought they would corner the market on recharging and swapping batteries at their service stations.

Oil companies know less about batteries than anyone, or they wanted to keep them off the market.  Stupid or Evil, take your pick.

    my two watts worth

  3. Sort of.  That depends why they bought the technology.

After they bought it, the RAV4 EV went out of production in 2003.

So if Chevron/Texaco's goal was to delay the production of electric vehicles by a few years, maybe it wasn't a waste of money.

Of course like you said, all EVs now are moving toward lithium ion batteries, so the NiMh battery technology purchased by Chevron/Texaco is basically obsolete just a few years later.

In fact, the first affordable highway speed EV is set to come out in July of this year, using lithium batteries.
