Why is it my AVG 8.0 Free Edition suddenly cant update?

When I update it, an error occurs saying that a .bin file is missing..

What should I do? should I uninstall and reinstall it? or does the avg site where I update my anti-virus has the problem?

Pls. help me with this... I'll pick for the best answer thanks...

  1. Try this, it worked for me.

1>Start up AVG and click update now. The list of updates will show in a popup.

2>Click on the more information link

3>Right click on each update (except the last one http://free.grisoft.com/softw/80free/upd... cuz this is the one that is causing the problem) save target as....and save updates in a file folder.

4>Cancel update in popup window and click on >TOOLS in the AVG window and go down to Update from Directory and go to the file you saved the updates in and install from there.

It should then say you are up to date and all components are working properly ;-) Cheers

  2. You could fix it, if you can find the name of the missing .bin file and ask someone else to mail it to you.

Otherwise, it's probably less of a hassle to just uninstall/reinstall the AV.

I also recommend switching to Avast. AVG 8 IMO is terrible.

  3. i had the same problem

I would think that it will fix itself next time an update comes around

  4. Go to http://free.avg.com/ww.download-update-a... and download all the bin files except the one marked IAVI: 1616. That is the one causing the trouble.

Now in AVG select Tools > Update from Directory and go to the file where you saved the updates. Install these and AVG should be working properly again.

  5. The missing .bin file is a part of the set of update files sent everyday...it's just that the .AVG update servers didn't distribute the .bin file along with the other files that make up the virus database update, so the AVG program rejected todays update and is still using yesterday's virus database. That means that you're still protected and the program is working. AVG updates the program everyday, so at the very least the missing .bin file problem will be corrected within 24 hours.

DO NOT REINSTALL the program. When you do that you actually put your PC at greater risk because the AVG install file on the website will not include the most recent virus database - you will end up using a database that may be as much as a week old, maybe more. Just leave the program as is and the .bin problem will go away within the next 24 hours.
