For an essay competition, i need some ideas on what to write about. This is the title :

A photographer takes a picture of an old man and an artist paints a picture of the same old man. Does either picture represent the real old man more accurately than the other.

It only has to be around 2000 words. Any ideas? maybe about the natrure of art?

  1. i think camera is able to capture a natural expressions of an pld man...expressions which shows a kind of life which he spent.but brush has certain limitations,,,it can not capture the thousands of colors coming and going from that old man's face.a brush can mis the true feeling of a person,,which can be seen by the curves and depths of face but a camera is lucky to have this ability

    i think m nt cnfusing u

    best of luck :)

  2. The photograph can capture a moment in time, the painting has the ability to know the man, to incorporate what is beneath the surface, communicate deeper emotions not visible in that instant. The artist, however, can then put their own interpretation into the painting easier than the photographer can; therefore possibly portraying the man less accurately. Neither can really represent the 'real' old man, only what they interpret the old man to be.

  3. what kind of title is that??

A title should only be around 3 words, buddy.

    Thats like a whole paragraph!

  4. awww sounds like an interesting topic!

this is just a suggestion, but personally i would write it from this point of view:

neither the picture of an old man nor the painting by the artist can capture the true character of the old man. All that we see, and this includes in paintings and graphics, is the surface, they cannot possibly display the true characteristics and personality of the man simply through the physical. Personality and character is supposed to stem from within, and if this were true, the external (although it is a reflection of the inside), is merely a reflection not a true and unbiased display of the true character of an individual.

hope that helps, or at least gets you thinking about the essay.

    ciao
