Question:

A bit of my gum above my tooth has worn away

ive been brushing my teeth twice a day with a normal (non-electric) toothbrush. but above one of my canines 1-2mm of gum has worn away, exposing the tooth. i can see that on another two teeth this is starting to happen. im trying to brush my teeth more gently and am switching to my electric toothbrush because i dont brush as hard with that. anyway i was wondering if this would heal itself or if it will need treatment and i need to go to a dentist (urgently)?

thank you

  1. receding gums are usually treatable. Brushing too hard or with a hard bristle brush is a common cause.

If you smoke, you should stop.

If you have mouth jewelry you should remove it as both of these can cause the condition.

I don't think it's urgent unless it continues getting worse.

  2. Ok. Well you will almost definitely need to go to a dentist. It really depends on how bad it is. If it is a tiny bit, you probably don't. But if it is a fair bit, like more than two millimetres you should go just to check it out.

  3. should heal its self,

  4. You have a receding gum line. Yes, you can go dentist but that wont help too much, usually it runs in the family. Try using a softer tooth brush and don't brush so hard. Best of luck :)
