A boat is traveling up river 30miles.it takes 2 hours. going back down river it takes 1 hour. whats the speeds

I need to know the speed of the boat and the speed of the current. The boat speeds are the same

  3. 1: Speed boat  plus speed of current = 30 mph

    2: Speed boat minus speed of current = 15 mph

    adding both equations together results in :

    Twice boat speed = 45 mph

    Therefore boat speed = 22.5 mph

    Therefore speed of current = 30 mph - 22.5 = 7.5 mph.

  6. Going up river you will be doing in laymans terms 15mph  and downstram you will be travelling at 30mph.and no it is impossible for the boat speed to be the same,if the time frames are different

    You have the current going upstream flowing towards you causing the vessel to work harder.Same principle if you are walking into a strong wind.The body exerts more force to walk forward into the wind but turn around and walk with the wind(on your back) it takes less exertion.Hope this helps
