A bug that eats trees using a long stinger?

theres these bugs i saw on a tree that had these long stingers and they were literally boring a hole into it they loked almost like large wasps, i suppose i could capture one and take it to a dnr but its on private property soo i would like to know if neone knows before i resort to that
