Question:

A bump on my betta's lip?

Just this morning/afternoon I noticed a small (maybe the size of a small pimple) white-ish spot on my betta's lip. I have had him for about 7 months. The water is clean and the temperature is good. He is swimming happily and ate well this morning. I put him into a new bowl today with a new plant and new gravel today, could that be the problem? I cleaned it all very well with warm water and made sure it was at the right temperature before he was placed in it this morning. The only thing that seems wrong with him is this bump. What can I do?

  1. Kaycee, it is NOT ich....a bump or a pimple...would it be possible for you to post a picture of the bump???..that will be very helpful..I will help you diagnose the problem...and don't use any medications...hold on..before we see what it is...please post a picture and I will EDIT...MAil me if you like...

EDIT: Oh you mean you think he had ich???

grayish version...you mean has gray patches??more than 1??

    http://bettatalk.com/betta_diseases.htm

Ok...look at this page...and try matching his condition to the pictures...I think Fungul Infection cos of the gray version you say...Umm...dont use any suggested medications...post what you think he has from the list..I will EDIT again..and let you know what safe medication would be...

2-3 white spots is not ICH..ICH is like salt grains over their body...and fins...how does he behave...does he scratch against anything in his bowl??..does he lay around??does he eat well??swim well???any color change???does he clamp his fins??do the patches look like cotton patches??

EDIT: What kind of aquarium salt: http://www.kokosgoldfish.invisionzone.co...

Check this link for the right kind of salt...also keep a track of the dosage...for a betta start with 0.5% salt...meaning 0.5 teaspoon per gallon...raise the temperature to 78...then after 12 hours add another 0.5teaspoon per gallon...and raise the temperature to 80...after 12 hours get it 0.2%..meaning add 1 teaspoon per gallon...and let it stay that way for at least a week...and change 100% water every two days...replace with temperature matched conditioned water..definitely with the same amount of salt..meaning 0.2%..Also add a bubbler..this will increase the oxygen in the water..kills a lot bacteria..I hope it works...and mail me if you need any help on this if he does not get better....

  2. It could be the beginning of ich.  It starts as small white spots and can be only one dot.  Being too clean wouldn't cause it but being stressed can.  A betta should be housed in a 5 gallon heated filtered tank not a bowl.
