A busy weekend for the national fencers in Germany
April 16 and 17 were quite busy days for the fencers in Germany. A total of three events took place in three various venues Tauberbischofsheim, Bonn and Alsfeld of the country.
Alsfeld featured the German Youth Championship 2011 that was conducted in both the men’s and women’s sabre weapon discipline. This competition was rated as grade A for the cadet fencers that required an FIE A grade license for participating in its
Individual as well as Team event.
In this event, a total of 77 fencers participated that were distributed in 11 groups-of-seven known as pools. In addition to these, twelve fencers carried an automatic bye to the top-32 direct elimination round.
The German Youth Championship 2011 title was won by Thomas Gorzen from FC Göppingen by trouncing Benno Schneider from TSV Kenten by 15-11.
Schneider qualified into the finals by defeating Adreas Falb from TV Ingolstadt by 15-12, whereas the other finalist, Gorzen, single-handedly won over Riccardo Donzello from Königsbacher SC at 15-7 score points.
The third position was shared between Falb and Donzello, clinching bronze in the Men’s Sabre Individuals.
In the Men’s Sabre Team event, a total of 15 teams participated in which three were exempted from the preliminary rounds, whereas the rest were equally divided into three pools. The club teams to secure the medal wins were TSV Bayer Dormagen as first
on defeating the KSC Koblenz placed second by 45-42 scores.
The bout for the third position was a fearsome cut-throat game between the two teams, Westfalen I and TSV Kenten. However, Westfalen I luckily took up the decider point and sealed the third position with a score win at 45-44.
In Women’s Sabre Individuals, twelve fencers held an automatic bye to the top-32 direct elimination round. In addition, a total of 77 cadets participated in the Individuals.
Ann-Sophie Kindler from TSG Eislingen was declared as the title winner of Women’s Sabre Individuals with one point win over Judith Kusian from TSV Bayer Dormagen at 15-14. The third position was shared between club Dormagen’s Beatrice Henze and Königsbacher
SC’s Marie Goreg.
In Women’s Sabre Team competition, again TSV Bayer Dormagen secured a medal, being gold this time followed by FC Tauberbischofsheim as second and KSC Koblenz as third, after defeating the FR Nurnberg club at 45-35 scores.
An international tournament was also carried out on April 16 in Bonn, Germany. In addition to the host fencers, this competition also had minor participation from other nations, namely Moldavia, Belgium, Romania, France and Netherlands.
The competition was held in the Men’s Foil Individual discipline only with 16 pools comprising of five to six fencers in each pool.
The winners of this tournament were the Germans, Moritz Kroplin as first, Marius Braun as second followed by a third position share between Dominik Behr and a Romanian, Daniel Alexandru Diaconu.
Another event named the German SAMSUNG Individual and Team Championship 2011 took place on April 16 and 17 at the Olympic Training Centre, Tauberbischofsheim in Germany, comprising of both men's and women's epee event.
