Would this work?

I'm thinking many people want the power of V8 engines and the fuel efficiency of a V4.

So would it be ever possible for a auto maker to create a system that, at a flip of a switch, would disconnect four cylinders from the crankshaft, fuel and air line, and everything else?

So it would run on 4 cylinders? Btw I realize V8's are heavier.

I was just thinking about this in 6th period don't blame me if it's a stupid idea...

Also, if you make millions from this idea, hook a brother up so I can get a nice car :)

  1. General Motors has made it for quite a while, the cadillac was one of the first. The 32Valve 300HP Northstar V-8 I believe. They still do it today. They start cutting out cylinders as you cruise along on the highway. Down to four from a V-8. Sorry man. Too late, but keep thinking, one day you may shock the world. That was smart thinking, go into engineering, Toyotas, they are very smart cars, just using cheaper parts, so people think they don't last like they used to. Still good cars, and a good company. God Bless and good luck.

  2. The Honda Odyssey already uses this. It shuts down some cylinders when cruising under light throttle.

  3. I thought of this years ago and they just started making them about a year ago :-(

  4. This particular concept won't work, but there are similar attempts that have been made. The Cadillac V8-6-4 was one failed attempt.

  5. Well - now you know it's not a stupid idea!  It's a good idea.  So good it's been commercialized already.

  6. This is your idea! Too little to late. http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?id=firi...

  7. they have that technology now
