    Mitosis is associated with cell division.  Since each cell (excluding s*x cells) should have the same number of chromosomes, the cell will duplicate it's DNA resulting in a new set of 12 chromosomes nearly identical to the the original 12.  The new set is separated into the new cell while the original set separates back to the original cell.  As a result, there are 2 cells, each of which has 12 chromosomes.

    If this were meiosis, the number of chromosomes would be cut in half.

The wording seems kind of tricky, and if taken at face value, I agree with Vinod above - if there are 12 REPLICATED chromosomes at the beginning of mitosis, there must be 24 TOTAL chromosomes at the beginning of mitosis, so that there would be 12 chromosomes per daughter cell at the completion of mitosis.

    If it's just a badly-worded question, and you mean 12 total chromosomes at the beginning of mitosis, then the answer would be 6.

  5. A cell with 12 replicated chromosomes means that there are 24 chromatids connected with 12 centromeres. In anaphase the 24 chromatids line up and are separated.. each new cell contains 12 chromosomes/chromatids...

    mitosis replicates the same amount of chromosomes in its offspring as seen in the parent  cells.

    if it were meiosis, it would be 6, b/c it'd be half.

    and these haploids would join together to make a zygote diploid - 12 in all.
