A circuit in my house seems to have gone, what can I do?

One outlet in my kitchen and my garbarator are on the same circuit, while using a coffee grinder the circuit blew, now it doesn't come back on even with hitting the breaker.

Other than calling an electrician, is there anything I can safely try to do?

  1. If it is in your kitchen there is a good chance that this is on a GFCI  circuit (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter). These are installed in places where there is a risk of electric shock do to water. You need to find the outlet that has the little test and reset buttons on it and hit the reset button.

If that does not work and you have reset the breaker then you need to call an electrician.

  2. USA    If the handle of the breaker will not go to the on position, make sure you turn the handle of the breaker ALL the way off before turning it back on.  Turning it all the way off "resets" the breaker.  Do not "hit" or beat the breaker, you will just damage it, and possibly cause more trouble than you have now.   If the handle does go to the on position, but trips instantly, there is a short circuit.  Unplug everything, turn switches off and start all over.  If the breaker still trips instantly when you try to turn it on, with nothing plugged in and switches turned off, there is a short in the wiring and you should call a licensed electrician to check it out.  If the breaker holds, plug things in one at a time until you find one that trips the breaker.  That will be the bad appliance.

If the breaker will turn on, but you still do not have power, the receptacle might be a Ground Fault Interrupter (GFI) type.  The GFI might have tripped, and has de-energized the rest of the circuiit. This type has two buttons in the middle of the recep.  One button is to test it, the other to reset it.  After the breaker has been turned on, push the reset button in.  This should restore the power to the circuit.

If the above fails, either provide a more detailed explanation of exactly what and how many items are on the circuit, exactly what happens when you try to turn the breaker on ( is there a flash or a spark or a noise ) and what you have done.  Or, get a licensed electrician to check it.

  3. Turn the breaker completely off and back on again. This will reset it.

  4. lets see if i can be as smartassome (get it),kitchen new,all counter outlets gfi.kitchen old-gfi within 6 feet of sink,no need to go on,you say garbage thingy on same circuit.unless switch for grrrrrr.thing is in oven, its on load side of gfi.gfi outlet cheap, gfi breaker not,i say bad ,I MEAN broke,I MEAN ,not working gfi,i tried to tell you they where cheap, now who's with me.on the serious note, unless your qualified, which i drought a qualified electrician would be asking, hire one       p.s.   USA??????  Mr miagi say switch breaker on or switch breaker off, no turning aloud
