the table opens in the middle to allow the addition of leaves. each leaf is 12" wide and is rectangular in shape. how many leaves must be added to change the area of the table to 2696 sq. in.? (the table is in the shape of a circle)

  1. The answer depends on the length of the leaves, which is also the diameter of the original table.

    A = pi*r^2, so r = sqrt(A/pi) = 20" (close enough)

    diameter is twice that, or 40"

    So each leaf is 12" x 40" = 480 sq in area.

    To add 2696 - 1256 = 1440 sq in to the area of the table requires addition of 1440 / 480 = 3 leaves.
