A complicated question: Next week my Husband, 12-week-old son & I are going to San Jose, Costa Rica?

My husband is going to San Jose, Costa Rica for work.

The babe and I are tagging along for some low key adventures and will spend most days on our own 'touristing' in San Jose and the surrounding areas.

I have travelled extensively - alone and with other "grown ups". Historically, I have recieved a lot of attention in certain cultures... I am blonde/blue, 6' tall and busty. With out being crass, I am sometimes tremendously 'popular' with guys that like to spell out current deficiencies in thier s*x lives (e.g. the lack of a six foot blonde.)

Normally I am quite comfortable and confident in my own abillity to deal with the chatter and even the occaisional physical advance that needs to be rebuffed. However I am concerned to be potentially placed in these situations with my boy.

Trust me, I am not heading out at night, going to bars or wearing a mini-anything. With wedding band firmly attached and cool head on my shoulders, am I going to have problems?

  1. You should stay away from San Jose. It is not the best place to be. I did fine while I was in C.R., they make comments but if you just ignore them then it will be fine. Trust me the Costa Rican women will knock your socks off, most of the American men walk around with their tongues hanging out about the ticas, the same way the ticos do with us American women.

  2. There is absolutely no way I would allow my wife to venture around San Jose without me.... well, I would not want to venture around San Jose either.

I have gotten lost there, and it made me feel very uncomfortable. You will be an obvious target.

The vast majority of Costa Rica is safe, and you would not have problems.... but in San Jose, I dont think you should go "touresting" alone. It's not safe for you or your 3 month old.

Either stay in a safe resort outside the city, go way outside the city for tourest stuff, or dont go.

  3. I would suggest that you DO NOT GO into the Del Rey Hotel - down town San Jose at any time during the day and ask any of the male vistors there "If they want any company tonight"!

Of course by the same token, if you are that s**y looking you just may be able to pick up a few bucks to help defray your traveling expenses while you are in Costa Rica if you do!

Buena Suerte y Viva La Pura Vida!

  4. how well does your child understand spanish?! Most of the men I had to deal with were speaking in Spanish and i just ignored them.

As a second point, with a child in tow you will not be as appealing. Part of what makes 'foreign women' so interesting is their apparent lack of luggage (child, husband).

  5. I recently moved to Costa Rica 1 year ago but i dont live in san jose, but i can say that being you are a tall busty blonde. you will recieve alot of attention n guys will stare, hoot n holla at you...Costa Ricans love american blondes...but u really wont have much to worry about in the means of being attacked or followed really but they will hoot holla n stare...goodluck

  6. San Jose is a big S****y.  Better to stay and play outside the main city.  Moravia, Escazu, Alajuela are all close by and much safer prettier towns.

  7. just don't travel alone. i believe you'll do tours with other people... just relax and enjoy. as you said... you are not coming down here to go to bars or clubs. take care'

  8. Yes, men will objectify you no matter what. My grandma could be walking down the street and they would yell at her shes hot! lol. Men in Costa Rica, especially in San Jose, will FOR SURE tell you nasty stuff, mostly in spanish. And they wont give a d**n if youre with your kid. I once was carrying my nephew in San Jose and a guy told me "Throw that one out and well make another one"...

San Jose is definatly not a place to tourist around nor to take your kid sight seeing. Not only is it dangerous and dirty, but theres also not much to do. Definatly go to the surrounding areas..
