  1. too much friction....not enough oil.  Or if it has a cooling system, it is not functioning well.  


  2. Compressing air by any means causes it to heat up; even with a bicycle pump.

  3. basic thermo, part of the energy that goes into the compress goes to entropy, which translates into heat.

  4. low oil if it is truly overheating.
