  1. Definitively a betta. Bettas are wonderful fish, and my family's kept them for years. Stick them in a 5 gallon tank after living in a muck-filled cup at a pet store and they'll love you forever. Obviously don't house two betta together or they'll tear eachother to shreds, and watch with the smaller fish since they like to nip at their fins. The local pet store keeps a male betta at a time in with the danios and these little silver and black algae eaters with no apparent problems. Mine's with an algae eater from that collection and they've been ignoring eachother completely for the month they've been housed together.

  2. You could get (ONE) Beta .  Those beautiful male fighting fish that most people keep in tiny fish bowls.  I have one in my community tank and he gets along with the other fish pretty well.  They come in blue, red, cream colors.  They are carnivorous, so besides regular fish flakes they like blood worms, etc.
