  1. It is very useful to take such a class to learn defense but more so to learn discipline and to put your body back in shape!

  2. There is no better shape than being in fighters shape. Just find a good mma school around your area and go speak with the coach. You'll lose all the weight you want and have lots of fun doing it. And most people have very limited to no background when they start so don't even worry about that.

  3. Don't know how young you are but what I do know is World welterweight champion GSP Georges "Rush" St. Pierre   is the absolute best in the UFC right now. And he had ZERO wrestling experience in HighSchool and college! He just learned when he started MMA. MMA following has grown immensely over the past few years. A lot of the former Ultimate Fighter beginners are top contenders now like Forrest Griffin, Josh Koschek, and Kenny Florian. You gotta start somewhere. Lookup martial arts camps by famous MMA fighters. That sounds like a good idea.

  4. Everyone starts somewhere.  It is perfectly fine to take beginner classes with no experience whatsoever.  Sparring, drilling and training is a great way to get in shape.  You will be motivated by your fellow martial artists and hopefully have the drive to stick with it.
