Question:

A couple of links on my bike chain have rusted and need replacing?

I've done a search and it appears I can get a couple of links to replace them pretty cheap. However, they only sell 9 speed and 10 speed links and chains. What does this mean? My bike has 6 rear sprokets and 3 at the front making it a 18 speed. Why do they only sell 7, 8, 9, and 10 speed chains?

  1. They sell your chain at Asda. Around £5.

  2. you are wasting your time trying to rescue a rusted chain, you need a special tool to remove the old links and you will probably find that if you havn,t lubed your chain regularly you have more rust about.

Take it to your local  bike shop and have a new chain fitted, about £15, and lube the new one about monthly with GT85 teflon spray.

  3. Nashbar 6/7 Speed Chain

"...only sell 9 speed and 10 speed links and chains. What does this mean?" -- 9 or 10 or in your's 6 ... today refers to the number of cogs on the rear cassette.

And since there are more cogs in only a slightly wider space the cogs are thinner and closer together for a 10 v. 6; chains and drive train components are all therefore "speed" specific

  4. You can buy a cheap 6 speed chain at a shop for $12 (nearly as cheap as you can get your links shipped to you). You are correct in thinking that these 9 and 10 speed links will not fit. No one makes a 6 speed anymore, but 7 speed is the same size. I would not recommend soaking your chain in solvent. The solvent will penetrate the links and wash away all the internal lubricant. If your chain is rusty (I'm assuming these links are frozen and won't go smoothly through the rear derailleur?) you should just replace it. You may want to take your bike to a bike shop. It may need other work. If your chain is rusted, your shift cables may be rusted too. A tune up should run about $25 plus chain $12 and cables $16= $53. It would really make your bike run smooth.

  5. I was at my bike shop last night buying a new 10 speed chain for my bike and noticed for $8 they have a chain made for 5,6, and 7 speeds.

Contact a bike shop and ask.

  6. take it to a cycle shop like HALFORDs

  7. try soaking the chain with penetrating oil leave for hour then slowly move the seized links with a couple of plyers either side of the rusted links if it works then give it some light oil
