A couple of questions on structuring a formal letter?

How is the postcode written in the UK? Is it below the city/town or next to it? Or are both correct?

Another thing, if I am writing a letter to someone in a certain department of a company, but I don't have any names to go by, to whome must I address it? Must I use the phrase, To whoever it may concern?

Would appreciate any help.

  1. Hi there, a UK postal code is written after the county on the last line and you should address a letter to Dear Sir/Madam.  Hope this helps x

  2. and if you write Dear Sir/Madam, you should finish it with Yours faithfully (initial caps on Yours and lower case on faithfully)

  3. The postcode is normally shown as the last line of the address.

For the unknown name try "The Manager" as in

    The Manager

    Special Products Section

    Smiths Bakery

    London

    W1A 9XX

    Hope this helps.

  4. Sir is just fine...
