Question:

A creative way to help the homeless?

From the hostel where I work it's only two streets to a homeless shelter and we want to do something to help. My boss wants us to be really 'creative' about this.

This isn't a party hostel by any account so any parties, drinks etc are out or at least out till July/August. Any creative ideas of something we can do this time of year?

  1. Everyone has 1 suit, Winter Coat, Light Jackets, or articles of clothing in their closet that absolutely will never fit them again, but for some reason they keep hanging there.

If you think about all the clothes you really don't wear EVER... these need to come out of there and be given to people who really need them

In fact.. I can think of at least 2 suits that will never fit me again

a bunch of shirts, shoes, and other items that are NOT BAD looking or damaged.. which I can give away and that will make a homeless/needy person very happy.

And if you really want it to mean something.. Don't take a tax break or deduction for your contribution.  Make it really altruistic.

  2. A nice good meal and a happy warm atomsphere  and everybody being helpful and friendly in case they would like advice, and a very nice loads of clothes with a comfortable bed to sleep in.

  3. Adopt a homeless for a day treat him and let him stay in your house

  4. Walk a mile in their shoes...

  5. This is a great question! I'm personally doing this myself I'm trying to collect as many blankets as I can to donate to the homeless living on the streets. It's saddening that so many people have to go without. When each of us can make a difference in the lives of other people.

  6. So your boss wants you to be really 'creative'? You or others may come up with the best idea on the planet which really sounds and looks good BUT is it really going to be any good to those in the homeless shelter?  There must be someone in authority there so someone should ask what is their immediate requirement?  Could be food, clothes, company whatever.  Report this back to your boss and then as a team see how you can help these people. I thinking tell her that would be really 'creative'.  Bet he/she is mad she didn't think of it first.

  7. GIVE EM A JOB!!!!

  8. I'm against helping the homeless, and with good reason.

I was walking through London a few years ago and it was absolutely p*ssing down. I saw a homeless man begging for money in a doorway. I gave him £2 and carried on walking. I had a sudden urge to go back and take him for a coffee to get him out of the rain. On doing so he felt so guilty of my kindness, he owned up to being a well off businessman who lived in Croydon and spent his lunchtimes collecting change as he said he could make over £100 a day for a couple of hours work. He gave my money back and bought me the coffee. I was rather annoyed and walked off in the end. That was the last time I ever helped a 'homeless' person.

  9. How about instead of something your boss will feel is "creative", you do something that the homeless feel is actually "helpful"?

Call the local homeless shelter and ask them what they really, truly need.
