A critical analysis of Force India’s performance in the 2011 Formula 1 season
Force India have been one of the better new mid-running teams of the sport as they have made a name for themselves in a very short span of time.
Force India is headed by the Indian billionaire Vijay Mallya who has been a huge fan of motorsports for the past 30 years. He is very passionate about Formula 1 and he believes that his team can even make it big one day in the sport if they keep working
at this pace.
The team became a part of Formula 1 back in 2008 and the first season was quite tough for them as they were unable to secure a single point. However, Force India started to score some pretty good points starting from the 2009 Formula 1 season and it seemed
that they would grow to become a good mid-running team of the sport which they really have.
The 2010 Formula 1 season was the best run for them as they secured the 7th place with the help of 65 points in the constructors’ standings. The team is expecting similar results in the 2011 Formula 1 season as well but they have been slacking
a little bit.
Force India are currently in 8th place with 12 points in the constructors’ standings after the 2011 British Grand Prix.
Both of the team’s drivers Adrian Sutil and rookie Paul di Resta gave the team a stunning start as they both scored a point finish giving the team 3 points in total. The following race seemed quite promising for them as well as di Resta again secured another
point after which it seemed that the rookie is going to be one of the star performers in the sport in the near future.
Since then however, the team has not been able to secure a single double point finish as Paul is struggling to score some good results while his teammate has secured points on two occasions.
Sutil secured the 7th place at the Monaco Grand Prix and at the European Grand Prix secured the 8th place giving the team 8 valuable points.
The team has been performing very well during the qualifying sessions as di Resta on many occasions even qualified until Q3 which determines the 10 fastest drivers of the race weekend. The young rookie has outperformed his teammate on 6 out of 9 occasions
and the only thing that the team lacks currently is a race strategy.
Force India have not been able to think their races through mainly and maintaining track position for them seems like a very difficult task which should not be the case.
Di Resta has been struggling to perform well during the races and maybe it is because of the lack of enough pace in his car. Sutil has been facing the same problem as well even though he is quite experienced which clears one thing for sure.
The race strategy and the way the team is thinking during the races needs to be spontaneous and adequate according to the situation. There is no doubt that Mallya is doing a fantastic job with the team but in order to make it big, they will have to think
out of the box, eliminate minor errors and get the best performance out of each part of the car.
