  1. Actually, when Jimmy Carter was president my raises were larger than the rate of inflation.

  2. First things first, gasoline rationing was a necessary evil.  It probably will be again by the end of this next decade, regardless of who gets elected.  It wasn't Carter's fault that OPEC decided to shut down the pumps, and it won't be McCain/Obama's fault when the juice starts to run out.

Secondly, Democrats have historically benefited the nation as much as some Republicans.  President Franklin Delano Roosevelt helped to end the Great Depression through his economic policies, and President Bill Clinton's ever controversial NAFTA plan brought several billion dollars into the US economy.  That isn't to say that we haven't had Democrats who have hurt the economy, but I don't think that you're going to try to fool yourself into believing that everyone Republican has been wonderful with finances, either.

  3. lol

BILL CLINTON, really LOL at you!

  4. The economy did well under Bill Clinton because he had a Republican Congress for six of his eight years in office.

  5. It doesn't really matter who the President is when it comes to personal finanaces.  Each person can make good decisions to help out their own financial situation.  Your friend is probably living above her means.  Maybe she needs to sit down and make a realistic budget.  She may also have to get a job that pays more if she can't cut back on or reduce the cost of the lifestyle choices she is making.

I have found that I can live quite comfortably on about $2000 a month.  I don't live in the lap of luxury, but I do have enough disposable income to do fun stuff now and then.  I also have a small apartment and my wife and I share one car that is a four door Focus (but its big enough for us and gets good gas milage).  Sure we could have a bigger place and two cars and dine at the fancy places all the time instead of only on special occasions, but I have decided that I don't want to work the hours nor the high pressure kinds of jobs that it takes to make the kind of money that lifestyle takes.  I have gotten by on $1000 a month before.  I had to cut back on a lot of stuff I was doing that wasn't necessary anyway, but I didn't starve and I had a place to live.

I know people who make ten times as much as I do and you know what?  They are not any happier than I am.  In fact, some of the richer ones are actually miserable.  When I talk to them, the don't talk about doing fun things with their family or about the quality time they spend together.  They are so busy working all the time that they hardly see each other except on holidays.  They complain about their mortgage, car payments, how stressful their jobs are, how their pool isn't big enough etc.

It seems to me that if you let yourself get caught up in the materialistic way of thinking where you think you have to be rich and have lots of fancy stuff to be happy, that you are never really satisfied.  I got caught up in it a bit a few years ago.  I had a $40,000 a year job and was buying all kids of expensive toys with it (nice apartment, pickups, high end computers etc).  But the job's long hours and high stress environment was draining me.  I was getting to the point where I was dreading going to work in the mornings.  I was so tired on my days off that I hardly felt like playing with all the stuff I was buying.  I wasn't making enough time for my family either.  I had few friends and spent little time with them.  I didn't even have a girlfriend at that time, but then I was so focused on work that I didn't make time for dating either.

I woke up and realized I was not happy.  I quit that job and started working part time or short term contract jobs.  I now have lots of free time that I use to spend quality time with my family and friends.  I've cultivated a great relationship with a girl and wound up marrying her.  She's not rich either and she doesn't care about money either.  She loves me for who I am, not any position I might have had in some company or some big bank account I was working towards before.

I have time to volunteer at church and a museum and help people out now too.  I have lots more friends than I ever did when I was making bigger bucks than I am now.  I've joined a Medieval reinactment and a computer club.  I never would have had time for hobbies like that with my old schedule.  I'm not rich in material things (I've sold or given away a lot of the expensive toys I had bought), but I'm wealthy beyond my wildest dreams in terms of relationships and meaningful pursuits.

  6. Unfortunately, a lot of dems react emotionally and do NOT think.

They have terrible memories--and the reason history has the old adage,: "If you don't learn from your mistakes, you're bound to repeat them." Dems repeat their mistakes every 5-8 years.

    Carter: THE WORST president ever--democrat.

JFK--Put us in Vietnam--and LBJ escalated the was-both Democrats.

Truman dropped the bombs--war monger some would say now--Democrat.

So--who are all these lofty humanitarian democratic presidents?? anyone???

  7. We had a huge economic growth under Bill Clinton. We had a recession under Bush Sr. and huge economic downturn right now as we speak.

  8. It's not a matter of making "Richer" It's a matter of creating new jobs, THAT PAY BETTER ! and having the courage to run with an idea and not be made into a fool by taking a chance ..

  9. Bill Clinton did.  How quickly we forget.

  10. Please report back if Obama wins and she's out of a job altogether.

Bill Clinton was a centrist democrat. He cut taxes and enacted NAFTA, which is exactly the OPPOSITE of what Obama is promising. He also had a republican congress during the boom. The last time Democrats ran everything, we had the 70s.

Creating better jobs is a myth. There are plenty of good paying jobs available right now. People who work in Diners and retail stores aren't going to magically be transformed into energy engineers. They have no skills.

  11. Politicians do not make people rich. They only affect the environment and opportunities for them to be bale to get rich. For instance, Bush started two wars and boosted the defense budget to make his defense contracting buddies rich. Then he started a meaningless war in Iraq and allowed his rich oil buddies to close refineries without placing any pressure on them so they could escalate the price and get rich.

Clinton on the other hand used progressive ideas to allow for more people to have the opportunity to acquire wealth. For instance, the dot com bubble that allowed a slew of people to cash in before it burst. His administration also eased tax burdens and regulations on new technology companies to allow for more growth.

  12. Um,

the congress has a much bigger impact on the economy than any president.

Government should not have any role in pay or job creation.

As for Clinton or even the Reagen influences on the economy I think this:

During both administrations, Tax cuts were enacted!

(interesting too Government revenue goes up when taxes go down, because of increased wealth creation). If government had any impact on the economy during the '90's it can probably be attributed to the congress.

Sorry, but the republicans ran congress in those days.

That is the Truth. Simple really, check out both sides to  every history because this election is important.

  13. you need to do your reserch better gasoline rationing was under Nixon/ford, inflation is as high now as it was under carter, home foreclosure are at record highs ,wages are dropping the average wage is $2000 less than when bush took office some states have unemployment as high as 15 % right now in areas ohio is one of them

  14. Because dems expect the government to Take care of all their needs instead of Digging themselves out of The hole that their in.

  15. Have you forgotten Bill Clinton? He took the last Bush administration and turned the economy around. Bush Jr. inherited a surplus economy and made it into the largest deficit in history. Republicans do not know economics 101.

  16. Bill Clinton

The fastest growth rate this country has ever seen.

During that time I got a job that paid me $60,000 starting

When I lost that job two years ago due to downsizing, as hard as I looked, all I could find was a job that paid me $35,000

I'm 57 years old, too late to go to school to hit my 62 year old retirement.  I was stuck between a rock and a hard place.

    I then got out.

    I'm doing great now.

    Peace

    Jim
