A detailed look at Fernando Alonso’s performance in 2012 Formula 1 season so far – Formula 1 news
Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso has been deemed as the most favourite contender in 2012 Formula 1 World Championship as he has performed remarkably well in the season so far.
The Spaniard is currently leading the drivers’ championship with 129 points and is ahead of Red Bull Racing pair of drivers, Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel. Moreover, he has a lead of 13 points over his main competitor, Webber.
It will be important to mention that the Scarlet team faced difficulties with creating an understanding about F2012’s setup throughout the pre-season testing programme. Furthermore, they expected to struggle during the first few races and their technical
director, Pat Fry even ruled out the probability of a podium finish in the season opener.
Nevertheless, the two-time world champion has successfully limited the damage for his team and has performed tremendously well right from the first grand prix. He secured an incredible fifth place finish in the first race held at Albert Park in Melbourne,
Australia after taking a start from 12th grid position.
Later, he delivered an inspiring performance in the second race at Sepang International Circuit in Sakhir and claimed his first victory of the current season in rainy conditions after setting off from 8th place in the grid.
Conversely, he struggled with the lack of pace in the third race at Shanghai International Circuit in China as he could only score 2 points after securing 9th place finish. Afterwards, he came 7th in the fourth race at Bahrain International
Circuit, after starting from ninth grid slot.
Later on, in the fifth race at Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona, he secured an impressive second podium finish and felt comfortable behind the wheel of his car. Furthermore, he secured a striking third podium finish in the sixth race at Circuit de Monaco
in Monte Carlo after starting from 5th grid position. Additionally, he came 5th in the seventh race at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in Montreal after he qualified for third position in the grid.
Besides, he scored a terrific win in the European GP at Valencia Street Circuit in Spain after setting off from 11th grid slot. Over and above, he claimed pole position in the British GP at Silverstone Circuit after two years and secured second
podium finish in the race.
He has been considered as the strongest driver in this year’s championship and is positively looking forward to perform well in the forthcoming races.
It will be interesting to note that Alonso’s race engineer, Andrea Stella has recently called him as the best driver with whom he has worked in the Italian team in his career until now.
“Michael is a great racer, very strong in race and very strong in way he controlled rear end of car,” Stella said. “Kimi was very, very quick when the car was operating in certain window. In this situation he can be fastest, although when car was not in
that window, he had to work harder to find optimal point with car. And with Fernando, his strong point is that, basically, he does not have weak points! He is strong as a driver in car in all conditions, from dry to extreme wet and outside car, which is very
important in modern F1.”
Let’s see how he performs in the German GP which is to be held at Hockenheimring on July 22.
