A detailed look at Sebastian Vettel’s performance in 2011 Hungarian Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
Red Bull Racing Team’s Sebastian Vettel is having an amazing run in the 2011 Formula 1 season as he is currently leading the champion ship with 234 points which is 85 points more than his closest rival and teammate Mark Webber.
With just 8 races left in the 2011 Formula 1 season, catching Sebastian is pretty much impossible if he keeps performing at the same pace and keeps performing so consistently.
Red Bull Racing Team on the other hand is leading the constructors’ standings with 383 points which is 103 points more than their closest rivals McLaren.
This means that RBR is in a very comfortable position right now and they can afford a couple of mistakes as well. However, they cannot afford retirements at the moment especially for Sebastian Vettel as the team is already losing its advantage in terms of
pace and now, McLaren and Ferrari are performing much better than them during the races.
Both Ferrari and McLaren have been performing really well since the past couple of races as RBR have not been able to defeat them since the past 3 races. Since Vettel has a big lead, they do not have anything to worry about as they are still competitive
but if the current championship winner fails to finish at least 2 races in the remaining 8 races, RBR are going to be in deep trouble then.
Therefore, the main concern for them at the moment is consistency and reliability which they have been improving upon.
Vettel had a pretty decent race weekend at the Hungaroring as he had a satisfactory start to the Hungarian Grand Prix after he finished in 2nd place in the timesheets behind Lewis Hamilton. The reigning world champion’s lap time was just 3 tenths
of a second short of Hamilton’s fastest lap time which is not a big deal for RBR.
The 2nd free practice session however, was quite disappointing for the team as Vettel finished in 5th place in the timesheets while his teammate Mark Webber finished in 4th.
McLaren drivers Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button had a pretty decent run in that session and Fernando Alonso was looking very quick for Ferrari as well as he finished in 2nd place behind Hamilton.
After using their first ‘overtime’ of the season, RBR improved their pace massively and topped the timesheets during the FP3. Vettel scored the fastest lap time of the session which was 3 tenths faster than Alonso’s time which was the 2nd fastest
lap time of the session.
The qualifying session at the start was quite disappointing for RBR as they were unable to beat Hamilton’s lap time during both Q1 and Q2 but in Q3, Vettel scored the fastest lap time of the weekend to secure the pole position in his final run during the
qualifying session.
Hamilton and Button however started from 2nd and 3rd places respectively and it was quite clear that holding them back was not going to be easy for the reigning world champion.
After struggling throughout the starting phase of the race, Vettel lost his lead to Lewis Hamilton after he made a very silly mistake and skidded his car. Button closed in as a result as well and it was just a matter of time after which Vettel lost his 2nd
place.
However, luck was by his side as Hamilton was unable to win the race due to a ‘silly’ pit stop decision as a result of which Sebastian Vettel finished in 2nd place behind Jenson Button.
