A detailed look at the performance of Lewis Hamilton in 2012 Formula 1 season until now
McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton is certainly one of the strongest contenders in the 2012 Formula 1 championship. Presently, he is leading the drivers’ championship with 88 points. Moreover, he is 2 points ahead of the Spaniard, Fernando Alonso who has a lead
of just 1 point over the defending champion, Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull.
Furthermore, he has emerged as one of the most consistent drivers in the season until now as he secured inspiring third podium finishes in the first three races and claimed end-to-end pole positions in first two grands prix.
Later, in the fourth race held at Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir, although he qualified for second grid position but he could only secure 8th place finish as he faced difficulties with the poor pit stop strategy due to which he lost some crucial
time and could not make any further progress.
Afterwards, in the fifth race at Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona, even though he topped the timesheets in the qualifying, however, he failed to meet the minimum fuel requirement in the car before moving back to the pit. Nonetheless, he delivered a compelling
performance and came 8th in the race.
Later on, in the sixth race at Circuit de Monaco in Monte Carlo, he secured 5th place finish after setting off from 3rd grid position. In addition, he again struggled with the poor pit stop tactic of the team.
The 2008 world champion performed incredibly well in the last race held at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in Montreal on June 10 and took his first victory of the season after starting the race from second place in the grid.
It will be important to mention that his contract with McLaren is going to expire at the end of this season and there have been many speculations that the British driver may join Red Bull for 2013. However, the team principal of the Woking based team, Martin
Whitmarsh expects Hamilton to stay.
“There's much more speculation outside of the team than inside the team,” he told Sky Sports News. “I think we're focused on winning the races and winning a championship. I think it's very clear that we enjoy working with Lewis. I think Lewis enjoys being
in this team. So we have full expectation of that continuing.”
He added, “He's going to have many years ahead of him. That's what he's trying to do; we're working with him and there's a really good relationship at the moment. The main goal for all of us is to win this year's championship.”
Besides, it will be interesting to note that Hamilton struggled in the last season because he could not be able to keep a balance between his personal and professional life. Nevertheless, during the start of this season, he expressed that he is ready to
make the necessary sacrifice in his private life so as to give his due attention to the sport.
Additionally, he said that his aim is to score reasonable points in each and every race in the forthcoming season so as to make his position stronger in this year’s championship.
Over and above, he is currently one of the most favourite drivers to claim the drivers’ title and is positively looking forward to perform well in the 2012 European GP which is to be held at Valencia Street Circuit in Spain on June 24.
