A detailed look at the performance of seven-time Formula 1 champion, Michael Schumacher
Formula 1 driver Michael Schumacher is currently driving for the Mercedes GP team. He is one of the talented and well-experienced drivers in the sport. The 42-year-old driver has won the world championship seven times in his Formula 1 career so far.
The seven-time world champion was regarded as one of the great Formula 1 drivers of all time in the previous years, when he was in a very competitive form. He spent 11 years of his Formula 1 career at Ferrari and made his impressive history with them.
Former Formula 1 team Camel Benetton Ford brought Schumacher to the mainstream in 1992. In the season, he took part in 16 races and won 1 race out of them. Schumacher ended his debut season at the third place in the drivers’ championship with 53 points.
He stayed with the Benetton Ford team until the end of 1993 season and during that he made a lot of improvements in terms of his performance and finished his 1993 Formula 1 season by getting fourth place.
The following year, Schumacher drove Benetton’s B194 car for his team and won the world championship for the first time in his F1 career. Winning the 1994 title was a big achievement for him, as he quickly made a lot of improvements and won the championship early in the season.
He won his second world championship in the next year by driving for the Benetton Renault team.
In 1996, he switched to Scuderia-Ferrari team, where he took a very positive start and finished his season with strong results. He was at the third place in the 1996 drivers’ championship with 59 points.
Schumacher was disqualified from the 1997 drivers’ championship, as he was punished due to an unsportsmanlike behaviour for an accident.
In the next year, Schumacher registered his second place on the 1998 Formula 1 season’s result sheets and finished in fifth place for the 1999 season.
The driver put a positive step forward towards his bright future in Formula 1 by achieving another goal in 2000. He won five world championships consecutively from 2000 to 2004.
He was the only driver in Formula 1 history in 2002 who finished his races in the top three positions throughout the season.
In 2005 and 2006 he finished his Formula 1 seasons at the third and second place respectively.
At the end of 2006 season, he announced his retirement from Formula 1 racing. He was the test driver of Ferrari in 2007, 2008 and 2009 season.
After coming back from his three-year retirement, he showed his interest towards the Mercedes team. Schumacher added that he would like to drive for the Petronas-sponsored team, as he believed he can take a good start with them after coming back from retirement.
The team driver took part in the 2010 Formula 1 season, with hopes of winning another world championship. But, he has been unable to win a single race victory throughout the season, as the other drivers were quite stronger as compared to him.
He participated in 19 races in the last season and ended up at the ninth place in the drivers’ championship with 72 points.
Schumacher is still driving for Mercedes GP team. He has a three-year contract with them that will finish at the end of the 2012 season.
