A detailed look on Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team – Formula 1
Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team is owned by Mercedes-Benz and is based in Brackley, United Kingdom.
The history of Mercedes is quite complicated. Mercedes-Benz made its debut in F1 during 1954 and won their first Grand Prix at France with the legendary driver Juan Manuel Fangio who made a remarkable victory in three more Grands Prix and made his way to
win the drivers’ title. In the following year, Manuel made his end-to-end victory for the team. Regardless of two consecutive glorious seasons, they left F1 because of Le Mans disaster in 1955.
Afterwards, the team made its comeback in F1 as a supplier of engine in 1994 and since that year four drivers’ championships and two constructors’ championships had been won with the Mercedes engines.
The current team since two years back have been successful in winning nine Grands Prix and two drivers’ titles as a constructor in F1.
The existing team had started its first season in 2010 after they bought Brawn GP at the end of the last year. However, they failed to manage the front-runner of the preceding season.
In 2010, seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher made his comeback after he took his retirement in 2006. However, the German record holder was completely outperformed by his teammate, Nico Rosberg. The team finished the season at fourth place overall
with 214 championships points in total following Red Bull Racing, McLaren-Mercedes and Ferrari.
During the season of 2011, drivers of the team were quite disturbed because of the performance of the car during the pre-season testing programme which went quite disappointing for them.
However, Schumacher made improvements during the year as compared to the last year and in Canadian GP, he finished fourth while his teammate, Rosberg in Turkey, remained at third position grid slot.
There have been a lot of discussions and talks regarding the performance of Mercedes in the upcoming F1 season starting at Albert Park in Melbourne, Australia on March 18, 2012.
Mercedes team has emerged as a very strong contender for the forthcoming season with a distinctive design of the new car.
Schumacher has expressed that the tussle amongst the rivals will be very close in the upcoming season with a narrow margin between winning and losing. In addition, he has said that the defending champions, Red Bull are indeed the most favourite team but
he expects to reduce the gap in the forthcoming season.
Besides this, he has said the pre-season testing programme went great for the team as it helped the team to get the necessary data to make the improvements in the car and the significant preparations for the upcoming season.
Furthermore, he stated that the first GP will be very crucial for the team and will provide the information about how well the improvements will work. However, he doubts the success in the first race.
He also said that the pace of the new car had been quite reliable and he would expect that they could handle the same during the first race of the season.
The team principal, Ross Brawn is expecting a very thrilling season ahead while he feels that the season will be a tight match amongst the rivals. Moreover, he said that McLaren and Red Bull are the most favourite teams. Nevertheless, he hopes that Mercedes
will do well in the forthcoming season.
