A detailed profile of Scuderia Ferrari Formula 1 team – Formula 1
The Scuderia Ferrari is an Italian Formula 1 team which takes the name from its founder Enzo Ferrari.
The team has been based in Maranello, Italy since 1943. It is one of the oldest teams in the history of Formula 1 dating back to the time before the World War II. The current team principal is Stefano Domenicali. The team is presently represented by the
duo of Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa driving in the chassis F2012.
The team was established by Enzo in 1929 and was using the cars produced by Alfa Romeo. Nine years later, Romeo decided to start racing cars under their own name and merge team Ferrari under the same brand. The decision did not set right with Enzo and the
team was abandoned by Romeo. The very next year, the team started to work on their car known as Tipo 815 running on eight cylinders with a 1.5 L displacement. The car was designed by Alberto Massimino.
The first ever F1 World Championship was launched in 1950 and Scuderia Ferrari was ready to enter the very first season. The team has not missed even one season to this date making it the only team to have competed in all the seasons of F1. However, the
team had not raced in the first race of the season, British Grand Prix, due to having some disagreement over entry money. In the next year, Jose Froilan Gonzalez scored Ferrari’s first race win in British GP. Alberto Ascari won the first drivers’ championship
for the team in 1952.
By 1983, the team had won eight constructors’ titles which was first introduced by F1in 1958. Enzo died in 1988 at the age of ninety. The next year, Ferrari driver Nigel Mansell won the championship against Ayrton Senna and dedicated the memorable win to
Enzo.
The 1990’s began in a good fashion with the duo of Alain Prost and Mansell. In 1996, Ferrari signed the famous Michael Schumacher who by that time had taken two of his seven memorable championships. In 1999, Schumacher was partnered by Eddie Irvine who came
in second in the drivers’ championship of that season while the team won the constructors’ title.
The 21st century started even with a bigger bang with the team winning both the constructors’ and drivers’ title for the next three years. In 2003, Schumacher becomes the first man to achieve six world titles driving the Ferrari car followed by his seventh
and last championship in 2004. In 2008, Ferrari snatches its sixteenth constructors’ win which is a record number of titles to this date. The team was being represented by drivers Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa in 2009; Massa gets involved in a serious accident
and the team ends up having a bad season. Fernando Alonso joins the recovered Massa in 2010. Despite the team enters the final race as favourites, Alonso loses the title to Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel. The team struggles in the next season with Alonso coming
in fourth on the drivers’ grid.
The current season sees Alonso running for the championship while the team retains Massa after he improves his performance as compared to the beginning of the season.
The team has enjoyed a great history making it one of the most respected teams in F1. It is not only the most celebrated team but also most reliable engine providers.
