A different type of horse breeding question?

someday, when i have everything set up and i'm trained properly by the right people on the matter of breeding, i wanted to know if this was a good reason to want to breed a horses: (i do not want to breed to just another "pretty horse" breed btw, and i dont plan on getting my own farm till i'm at least 35 if things go as planned.if you really want to do the math, i'm 22 now in school to be a nurse)

i want to breed frisians to keep the pure blood lines and good quality horses. i want to be able to sell good horses to people that are looking for the right horse for them when it happens to be one i'd be selling them. i dont want to over breed, i just want to keep the breed as pure as they've kept it for this long.

  1. A good reason to breed horses is if they are WC (World Champions) or maybe a horse you love and you don't wanna let them go when they do happen to leave this earth, so you breed them.

Frisians are beautiful horses and most people looking into them know what they are do, now if you were to say you were selling Quarter horses I'd be a bit afraid, more times than not the wrong ppl get ahold of Quarter Horses cuz they are cheaper.

If I were you, I'd keep a very sweet, good natured mare around and let the studs come to you. It'll be safer that way cuz studs can be scary sometimes, in more wayz than one, and if you will breed off of her you're in control of her past blood lines. Keep a chart, (maybe starting with her) and moving on to her fillies/colts. Then keep a record of it's sire and dam...and go from their.

  2. I would buy from you because I want the same right along side having a rescue farm. I was going to train horses, got my degree and now the economy is c**p and no one is doing much with horses. I am 21 and on the same road as you, I think keeping the breed as it is is very good as nothing is wrong with mixed breed of horses just some people like the good old pure breeds of a horse. So I am all for you and good job on wanting to do it the right way and not just throwing a stallion in with a mare.

  3. Gosh you know I think your heart is in the right place but in the current market conditions even great horses are having a tough time finding caring homes. I know reputable breeders that are breeding top of the line horses, the whole package, beauty, brains, athletic with great dispositions and top notch pedigrees and can hardly give them away. It is really scary. I hope by the time you start the market improves. As for a direct answer to your question I am going to go out there and say it even if it won't get me the popular vote: No I don't think you should breed for a good quality horse and/or to keep the breed pure. You should breed for the BEST horse you can, one that is an IMPROVEMENT to the breed WHILE keeping the lines pure. The point of breeding is to produce better than the stock you are breeding together. Disposition, athletic ability, and a beauty to look at are things horse shoppers look for. If you want your breeding to contribute something others want (and so your horses don't end up at the auction block) start with stock that are the best of the best. If it means your program starts with ONE mare of the highest caliber you can afford versus two or three at a lower quality, start with the one mare and then purchase the best possible breeding to a stallion that is the best CROSS for the mare for the best possible outcome. Do your breed research, certain lines have certains strengths and characteristics. Don't breed blindly being educated is what makes great breeders, not just heart. You will need both and sounds like you have got your heart in the right place already. :~)

  4. Ya, I think it is a good reason as long as you love horses and you want to help them and keep a beautiful breed living Strong, why not.

  5. well you found a breed where you cant go rong i dont belive you can over breed them cuase theres a place for them in every ones heart i truly love them there classy and betiful but EXPENCIVE i d also wait for my own place cuz stallions are mean if i was you i would by a fresian colt and work wiht him befor hes to big and pushes you around jbut you have a great idea

  6. I guess I would need to look at the horse market at that time.... Right now I think there are plenty of great Friesian breeders out there doing exactly what you want to do.... I would think that a responsible breeder would look at what is being produced and see if there is something missing or a direction that the breed needs to take that isn't already being taken... Then take the steps to better or help the breed.....

  7. sooo what are you asking????

  8. Frankly, this is THE reason to breed. To improve and keep pure the breed. I hope you can realize your dream. I have. it takes time and patience and a lot can go wrong, but a lot gors right also. Good luck!
